Van Explodes in Brooklyn

Van Explodes In Brooklyn
MARCH 24TH, 2002

A parked van exploded in Borough Park, Brooklyn, this morning as the owner was getting inside.

Police are still investigating whether there was a bomb, but authorities say there are no early indications it was a terrorist attack.

Police say the vehicle exploded shortly after 11 a.m., near the corner of 16th Avenue and 42nd Street in Borough Park. Witnesses told the Associated Press that the man was thrown from the van onto the street and that it appeared part of his right leg had been blown off.

The victim has been brought to Bellevue Hospital and is in critical condition.

A local political leader tells NY1 that the victim is Hasidic Jewish man who lives in the neighborhood.

Police closed 42nd Street between 15th and 16th avenues while bomb squad investigators swept the area.

Police are expected to hold a news conference soon to release more information.
