CALIFORNIA RESOLUTION HONORING THE BOY SCOUTS DEFEATED

SACRAMENTO (April 2, 2002) - Today, the California Assembly Judiciary Committee rejected a resolution that would honor the Boy Scouts of America on its anniversary of holding a congressional charter. The resolution, ACR 140, is authored by Republican Assemblymember Robert Pacheco of Walnut.

Jean Harris, executive director of the California Alliance for Pride and Equality (CAPE), applauded the Assembly committee's action and said, "The leadership of the Boy Scouts of America is failing miserably when it sends the message that discrimination and intolerance are acceptable. The organization's call 'to respect and defend the rights of all people' rings hollow when they continue to discriminate against gay Americans." She added, "The committee's refusal to adopt this resolution represents California's commitment to uphold equality for all people."

The 13-member committee has 8 Democrats, 4 Republicans and one vacancy. The resolution failed with a 4 - 4 vote. The tally is below:

YES - 4: All Republicans - Patricia Bates, Tom Harman (Vice-Chair), Robert Pacheco, and Rod Pacheco

NO - 4: All Democrats - Ellen Corbett (Chair), John Longville, Darrell Steinberg, and Juan Vargas

Democratic members who were not present when the vote was taken included John Dutra, Hannah-Beth Jackson, Kevin Shelley and Howard Wayne.

Assemblymembers Corbett, Longville and Vargas spoke about the resolution and how dismayed they were with the discriminatory policy of the Boy Scouts. Because of this policy, these members could not support a resolution honoring an organization that promotes discrimination.
