Berlin, April 10, IRNA -- A spokesman of Germany's interior ministry here Wednesday defended the attendance of Interior Minister Otto Schily at a controversial pro-Israel rally in Frankfurt.
"The event in which the interior minister will take part, does not support the policy of the state of Israel," Rainer Lingenthal told a news briefing in Berlin, contradicting statements by German Jewish leaders who have called on people to attend the rally, slated for Wednesday evening, to show their solidarity with Israel.
"The interior minister will represent the position of the federal (German) government which calls for peace, the balance of regional interests and is not biased towards one party," Lingenthal added.
The German government, a strong supporter of the criminal Zionist regime, has been under intense public pressure to openly condemn Israel's atrocities in the Palestinian-controlled areas.
Germany has also been the scene of numerous anti-Israeli demonstrations over the past 10 days, as more than 10,000 people took to the streets to protest Israel's latest military repression.
