The government portrays him as a mystery man who traveled the world with no clear means of support, kept bricks of cash in a briefcase and founded a U.S.-based charity that fed money to terrorists.

He says he is a simple Ann Arbor clergyman who lived off the charity of others and is the victim of a witch-hunt by federal agents.

I can't tell if this guy is a threat or not, but this is very disturbing:

The INS presented no evidence that Haddad was a threat to national security. But the government noted that Haddad owned a 12-gauge Remington shotgun, which he bought at a Kmart in September 1998, and said possessing the weapon made him a threat to the community. Hacker's decision said Haddad faced possible criminal charges for keeping the gun while in the country illegally.

When did the act of owning a gun make someone a threat to the community?

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service arrested Haddad for overstaying a tourist visa by nearly three years. The INS is trying to deport him,..........

His visa is no good for three years and the are trying to deport him. Geez

I believe that it is a violation of federal law for an illegal alien to possess a firearm.

I'm sure your correct, but the article says; his possess[ion of] the weapon made him a threat to the community. It just struck me that the guy has penty of legal problems aready, why did the article make it sound like that was the reason he was in prison?

The INS is trying to deport him, his wife, Salma al-Rushaid, and three of their four children.

The INS is "trying" to deport this character, who is here illegally. For crying out loud, what does it take? One doesn't "try" to deport him, he is simply deported. It's not rocket science. This individual has questionable means of support and is here illegally. Come on, what does it take? Must he commit an act of terrorism first?

Don't forget to send his buddy Conyers, too.

I agree with you. There is something really wrong with our laws if we have to "try" to deport someone who is here illegally. Illegal is illegal, deport them back and then let them fight it any questions from their own country.

Yes, unfortunately. Bush just doesn't get it or doesn't want to get it---his top priority is to ge re-elected with the help of minority voting blocs....our nation's security comes second to him.

Haddad, according to his lawyers, testified that his travels were linked to the Global Relief Fund's charitable efforts.

Why is it that these illegal immigrants can't do their 'charity' from say, Kuwait... or Lebanon? Maybe because Kuwait's government wouldn't have to TRY to deport the likes of these people, or treat them with kid gloves even when they have so clearly violated their visas?
