Press sources in the Jordanian capital Amman confirmed that Jordanian security forces killed one Jordanian and arrested two others in the Aqaba area when the three attempted to smuggle arms to the Palestinians last month.
Sources told Albawaba.com Sunday that Jordanian security forces have arrested Riyadh Yousef Amarieh and Osama Zayed Massarweh and killed their third partner, Abu Obadah. The three were caught red handed in an attempt to smuggle arms through the Jordanian port of Aqaba to the Israeli port city of Eilat.
The sources said gunfire was exchanged between the three smugglers and the security forces leading to the death of Abu Obadah.
The sources added that the three were caught while waiting for their transportion, a motorized rubber dinghy, to arrive. It is beleived that they had, at the time and in their possession, 40 rocket launchers, 120 RPG rockets, 50 Kalashnikovs as well as many rounds of ammunition.
On Thursday, the Israeli daily Yediot Aharanot reported that the Jordanian authorities had arrested a cell that attempted to fire missiles at Eilat hotels.
The daily added that the Jordanian army had arrested four Jordanians 30 kilometers away from Eilat with two Katyusha rockets and six mortar shells in their possession.
The cell members confessed that they had planned to strike hotels and tanks in Eilat, added the Israeli paper.
The Jordanian authorities have yet to confirm this information.
