Jordan marks Independence Day

AMMAN (JT) — Jordan marked on Saturday the 56th anniversary of its independence.

Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania attended a reception at Al Hussein Youth City hosted by Prime Minister Ali Abul Ragheb to celebrate the occasion.

Addressing the audience, Abul Ragheb highlighted the role of the Hashemite family in building a strong, modern Jordan and their determination to attain more progress and remain true to the Arab Muslim identity of Jordan.

Abul Ragheb said King Abdullah has continued with the Hashemite mission “with confidence, ability and earnestness despite the difficult circumstances the whole nation is undergoing.”

The premier highlighted His Majesty's support for the Palestinian people in their struggle against occupation.

He added: “In such a brief period of Your Majesty's reign, Jordan has accomplished a lot, despite the challenges and the barriers it faces. We are grateful to God for the stability and security Jordan enjoys under Your Majesty's leadership.”

In his address, President of the Senate Zeid Rifai highlighted efforts by King Abdullah on the political and the economic fronts.

“Citizens are reaping the fruits of Your Majesty's continuous efforts for a strong economy, comprehensive development, better living standards and well-developed human resources,” said Rifai, adding that such achievements have been attained “in an atmosphere of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights.”

The Senate speaker said that Arab and Islamic causes have received personal attention of the King, who defends them in international political and media arenas.

Minister of Culture Haidar Mahmoud also delivered a speech at the ceremony, which coincides with the Kingdom's celebrations of Prophet Mohammad's birthday.

The celebration was attended by members of the Royal family, the Royal Court chief, the King's advisers, former prime ministers and senior military and civil officials.

Their Majesties accepted congratulations on both anniversaries from guests, who included tribal chieftains, leaders from refugee camps, former deputies, Muslim and Christian clergymen and foreign diplomats.

On the occasion of Independence Day, the Royal Court received a number of cables addressed to King Abdullah from Arab and foreign heads of states.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hamza Ben Al Hussein also received cables of congratulation from Arab leaders, crown princes and senior officials.

The late King Abdullah I established Jordan in 1921. His efforts to achieve internal security and a national unity won the newly established Transjordan recognition from Great Britain in 1923. The country won its full independence in 1946 following the end of the British mandate.

King attends Awqaf celebration

Earlier, His majesty King Abdullah attended a celebration held by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs marking the Prophet's birthday.

At the celebration, which took place at the Islamic Cultural Centre at King Abdullah Mosque, King Abdullah watched a documentary on the life of the Prophet Mohammad produced by Jordan Television in cooperation with the Awqaf Ministry.

His Majesty awarded Royal decorations to a number of citizens with remarkable donations to build mosques in the country.

More like propaganda...

A friend of mine has written a novel about potential post 9/11 events. He wanted to explain why the terrorists did what they did. By his own admission, he had very few preconceptions when he started his research. He even managed to interview some terrorists in the West Bank and dedicated a chapter to the encounter. He concluded that to answer the question you have to understand Mohammed and Islam - the more people become like the prophet, the more likely they are to commit terrorist acts because he himself was a terrorist. Even an objective biography of Mo will show him to be on par with Hitler and Stalin. This is very scary stuff - sometimes the truth is not PC.

If Ken Burns did a documentary on PBS, it would have to be X-rated.
