Man on foot hit and killed on Interstate 77 (Fleeing shoplifter hit by truck)

(Columbia S.C.) May 30, 2002 - Around 4pm Thursday afternoon a man was hit by a vehicle and killed on Interstate 77 near Forest Drive in Columbia. The man was inside the of the nearby Wal-Mart where he had been apprehended for shoplifting.
The man reportedly became involved in an altercation with a Wal-Mart employee inside the store. The man left the store with the employee apparently in pursuit, both on foot.
When the man ran onto I-77 he apparently tried to flag down a motorist, but the driver drove away. The man was then struck by a J.B. Hunt tractor-trailer with a forklift and killed. Truck driver Phillip Hill from South Carolina was not injured in the accident.
Latronia Sumter, who saw the incident, says, "I didn't think it was worth his over a DVD player. What happened was wrong, but it's really kind of devastating what happened. That it happened at Wal-Mart and everybody comes to Wal-Mart, it's shocking."
The victim's name and age have not been released. Traffic was backed up near the scene for about 30 minutes.

Just missed him by about three hours.I did witness a crash several miles away on I-26,in the east bound lane.I was going west,but was saved by a cable divider.
