Texas quarter finalist named

Coin will feature design by Arlington artist

07/09/2002

By MANYA BRACHEAR / The Dallas Morning News

It's not clear whether Gov. Rick Perry flipped a coin to pick a design for Texas' new commemorative quarter. All that matters is that he did.

The coin - with a lariat rope around the shape of the state and a lone star in the middle - was designed by artist Daniel Miller of Arlington.

Mr. Perry apparently picked the favorite of the Texas Quarter Dollar Coin Design Committee, which forwarded him several finalists out of more than 3,000 entries. Among the rejected ideas: sketches of the Alamo, bluebonnets and armadillos.

An artist at the U.S. Mint will tinker with the design before the coin is etched, minted and released in 2004

The Louisiana quarter was released in May. Indiana will jingle in pockets next month and Mississippi is due out in October.

Not bad! I like it. The only thing that could have made it better was if they had added the legend "Don't Mess With Texas."

The coin selected was the top runner in an informal poll done in April:

I remember that poll. When I saw this news, the first thing I thought was "Hey, that's Number 5! They picked the right one!"

Hold it! Where is the Alamo?
Shouldn't Texas's shrine be somewhere on the coin?

I ike it too. Definitely the best of all of the choices. I do wish they had worked in a blue bonnet somewhere, though.

It certainly came out better than the Louisiana Quarter and especially the new Australian version.
