The FBI, in the midst of a massive reorganization in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, yesterday hired the top information and communications official of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as its new chief information officer.

It must be a "pick and choose" thing.

Exactly. If the collecting of genealogies is condemned by God, why does the Bible itself contain so many of them? Maybe there's a little bit more to the story than your selective quotes indicate, do ya think?

"When was the last time that you heard someone high within the Mormon hierarchy make a political statement? Jews, Baptists, and Catholic Bishops do it all the time. Maybe they mentioned this guys religion because it is a novelty."

They make statements with regards to religious freedoms, rights and beliefs. Mormons do the same. Besides there is a difference between speech and giving the FBI a database that was designed to collect or store data on people who do not belong to the Mormon Church. They mentioned his religion because he not only was a Mormon, but worked as an executive for LDS. A religious organization. It's a first.

Just like you pick and choose which of the commands in the Bible you follow? And just like you don't stone your disobedient children to death as the Bible commands one to do? ["And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die" (Deuteronomy 21:20-21).]

And equality for women? (1 Timothy 2:12-15 "...suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithsstanding she shall be saved in childbearing.) hm....

To show Jesus' bloodline so as to keep accurate the prophecy of him coming from the line of Adam and David?
Why do you think it happens? Why do you think it stopped?

Not really. They're admonitions do good works and to not teach false doctrines. Since you obviously do think there is more to the story, enlighten me.

Not hardly.  Many of these groups make political statements which have little, if anything, to do with religious values.  From all I hear of the Mormon leadership, they go out of their way to stay out of the political arena unless it has some significance to their religion.  Why, they even forbid (so I understand) political discussion from the pulpit.

If you don't like them giving away software, but would rather have them spend 80 millions on Oracle, that's fine and dandy, just don't complain to me when your taxes go up.  BTW, would you also complain about FSF or GNU software, or is it only software donated by a religious organization that causes you heartaches?

How have you determined what I do? Are you in my back pocket? Are you psychic? Are you observing my every move?
And just like you don't stone your disobedient children to death as the Bible commands one to do?
It's called the second covenant. I'm sure you're familiar with it.
And equality for women?
I have no problem with equality for women. There are many women of import in the Bible. You're "assigning me" beliefs!
Seems like you have a few issues. Why do you even bother claiming to be Christian when you have so many problems with it. Well, I guess I do need to find out first...Do you profess Christ?

I do not profess belief in any deity. And by 'you' I mean, in general. I don't see many Christians following the what the Bible says about women's rights (they have none, except to have kids and be submissive). And what exactly did the second covenant cover? Was it okay to stone your children then? Morally acceptable? Are you a cultural relativist then?

And you missed a couple of pertinent verses...
2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
2:10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
Learn anything?

Then why concern yourself? You have no understanding.

You have no desire of conversion and seek no understanding. Why bother and waste time explaining things to you.

What do you consider understanding? Agreeing with you? Can you not 'understand' the Koran if you are not Muslim?

"Go figure. I wonder who in the Mormon DC gang was pushing for this?"

Not me. I don't even claim membership in the "Mormon DC gang," as it were. 8~)

But, seriously, Darwin John already has "earned his bones" by modernizing and greatly expasnding the IT infrastructure of an exponentially-growing international religious organization that encompasses a complex leadership hierarchy; the world's largest family history (genealogy) repository and ongoing program; and more than 100 operating temples and thousands of other church buildings and over 11 million members worldwide.

John clearly needed no "pull" from within the Federal government, but he will be in good company, given that the FBI is home to a disproportionate number of his fellow members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I take comfort in knowing that a man of his widely-recognized ability and good character will be in charge of that which easily could become a bad genie struggling to escape from a magic lamp.....
