National Guard troops to join firefighters

By BRAD CAIN The Associated Press 7/22/02 7:37 PM

PAISLEY, Ore. (AP) -- Touching down from a helicopter tour of fires across Oregon, Gov. John Kitzhaber urged Congress to boost its commitment to preventing future blazes in the nation's forests.

"This is as much a war as the war we are fighting in Afghanistan,' Kitzhaber said at Paisley High School, which houses 814 firefighters hoping to contain the 31,500-acre Winter Fire in the Summer Lake Basin of south central Oregon.

"Congress has got to put in a permanent appropriation to keep resources coming" for National Fire Plan prevention programs, he said, calling for thinning forests of combustible material.

Kitzhaber touched down in this high desert town just as 250 National Guard troops from the 82nd Armored Cavalry based in Redmond were setting up their tents for mop-up operations.

"This is why I joined the Guard, helping people out when they need help," said Cpl. Thomas Reasons, 25, a grocery store manager who left his wife and two sons back in Sweet Home.

Billeting in cots standing just 12 inches apart underneath olive drab canopies, the troops were assigned to extinguish smoking stumps and hot spots around houses that stand surrounded by black ash on the narrow corridor along Oregon Highway 31 between Winter Ridge and Summer Lake, where the fire burned hot last week.

"We do want to make sure the fire is out around those houses," said Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Tom Berglund. Assigning the National Guard to mop up "puts our more seasoned firefighters more into the heat of battle."

In Paisley, Kitzhaber met privately with horse rancher Dan Napier, who lost a hay barn, shop and chicken coop to the flames. Napier believes precious time was lost in launching the firefighting effort as the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon Department of Forestry argued over who should take responsibility.

Deputy Incident Commander Danny Benson said he knew of no such delays, adding that the Forest Service and Department of Forestry in the Lakeview region enjoy a good working relationship.

At an earlier stop in the southwestern Oregon rural community of Ruch, Kitzhaber praised homeowners who prepared for fire by clearing brush, thinning timber, and replacing shake roofs with noncombustible materials. In part because of those preparations, none of the 215 homes in Ruch were evacuated in the face of the Squires Peak Fire.

Kitzhaber said these fires show the need for Congress to boost resources for making forests throughout the West healthier and more resistant to fire.

"This isn't due to lighting strikes," Kitzhaber said. Instead, the fires are the result of unhealthy forests that need thinning and prescribed burns to return to their natural state, which is less susceptible to wildfire.

"This is a huge problem. Unless you make the forests healthy, you're going to face this risk every summer," Kitzhaber said.

As he flew in a Blackhawk helicopter over the Squires Fire to the Upper Applegate Grange Hall near Ruch, he noted that areas where there had been commercial thinning only suffered mild damage from ground fires. He said the forests that were loaded with combustibles suffered major crown fires.

Environmentalists have opposed some thinning projects where the Forest Service planned to cut big trees, which are best able to survive fire, or damage fish and wildlife habitat.

"As you know, I am pretty Green and I get whacked over the head for that sometimes, but the fact is burning down a forest doesn't help fish habitat," said Kitzhaber, who has sided with the environmentalists on some issues.

Homeowner Matt Epstein blamed threats of legal action by environmentalists for keeping forest agencies from doing the proper thinning, saying that steps taken by homeowners on their own property are not enough.

Has the Poster Boy Green Governor of Oregon seen the smoke and started to make a break from the enviral fascists who elected him.

This is a huge turn around for him.

"As you know, I am pretty Green and I get whacked over the head for that sometimes, but the fact is burning down a forest doesn't help fish habitat," said Kitzhaber, who has sided with the environmentalists on some issues.

Nice try Katznslobber. You and your green enviral thugs set up these fire tinder box hazards in Oregon. You agreed with their agendas and backed Andy Kerr and the ONRC in their road closure program.

Now you want our tax money to solve the problem that you and your green buddies created.

Well, we have a freeper, Carry Okie, who has a book and a plan to change all of this and not cost the tax payers anything. Of course you and the other watermelons in Oregon will have a problem with Carry Okie's process. Carry uses capitalism to change decades of Oregonial Watermelon socialism and communism via the greenies.

Can you imagine the phone calls, the emails and the personal words he has received in the past week from the good conservatives in Oregon like we have here on Free Republic.

He had better distance himself from these Druid Envirals and the hell that they have caused in Oregon this past week. Their fire season isn't really supposed to start until next month.

If those BP power lines get shut down or burnt down, and there are massive blackouts in Kali Land, our fascist watermelon governor Grayout Davis, might see the light too.

This is a prime example of too little too late by the watermelon Katznslobber, poster boy for the Druids of the NW. He has served them well while screwing the rest of the People in Oregon.

He knows that these burning and burnt 200,000+ acres will be his legacy in Oregon, and what he will be remembered by the non insane/drugged out Oregonians. Only the brain damaged drugies who are the core of the enviralists in Oregon will love him.

It is time for the governor to realize that trees, fish and owls don't vote and don't pay taxes. The green nuts only want to destroy our country.
Protect the farmers, the loggers and the firefighters before your entire state burns to the ground, Governor!

Wasn't that the classic Oregonian Lie Sided with the environmentalists on some issues?

He has been the enviral poster boy and had helped Andy Kerr and the ONRC kill the logging industry and wood products industry in Oregon. Oregon's best crop is timber, and timber is in high demand in the states and the Asian countries.

However, thanks to the Enviral Fascists, loggers can't even harvest the dead trees from last year's fires caused by their no road and no logging agendas. So Oregon is in a terrible recession as key jobs for decades have been victims of economic eco terrorism by the ONRC, Andy Kerr and Katznslobber their hit man.

What we are seeing here is his trying to save face with conservatives and of course those who elected and controlled him, the envirals of Oregon.

Gov Taxhiker is trying to sound sensible to the normal folks outside Portland. If his economic policies had even a microscopic piece of conservativism as these statements we would have a chance to recover. He has been fighting forest management for his entire 2 terms and now that he is leaving he wants to run for cover while he clips his coupons.

Pray for GW and the Truth

Thanks for posting the real reality of this watermelon poster boy governor: He has been fighting forest management for his entire 2 terms and now that he is leaving he wants to run for cover while he clips his coupons.

He wants to return to the Umpqua River area to retire, fish and relax. He knows that if he leaves a legacy of a million burnt acres in Oregon, he can't retire in Oregon. The people where he wants to retire will remember these burnt ashes as his real legacy.

He has created hell on earth for the people in Oregon he was supposed to help and protect. They will make any retirement in Oregon outside of Portland a living hell!

This fool has been a terrible Gov. and a total failure as a leader. We have the highest unemployment in the country, a huge budget shortfall, yet this clown did nothing . The state owns billions of $$ of timber, But did the Gov. do anything take advantage of this windfall? No. He wanted to blow up dams on the Snake River in Idaho to "save the salmon" even thought we had a record catch. Folks, Gov. Letstaxsomemore is the worst Govenor in America.

Define Mouth when it comes to this guy.

Absolutely, this is a blatant attempt to blame it all on the federal government after close to 8 years of being the Green Poster Boy governor.

I own a store in one of the biggest malls on the west coast [Portland, Or]. We have been there since 1982. Mall traffic is so bad that THE MALL CAME TO US AND REDUCED MY RENT BY $2200 A MONTH FOR THE NEXT 6 MONTHS. The Portland area has an unemployment rate over 7.8%. The Rat Gov. has done NOTHING to help our economy except make it worse. GGGRRRRRRR

our fascist watermelon governor Grayout Davis, might see the light too.

Davis will see the light the same time Barney Frank goes straight and Ted Kennedy learns to drive over bridges properly.

Environmentalists have opposed some thinning projects where the Forest Service planned to cut big trees, which are best able to survive fire, or damage fish and wildlife habitat.

Environmentalists have a long history of demonstrating their utter lack of knowledge on ecology, and they aren't afraid to act on their ignorance, with disastrous results.

With your ability to find appropriate Keywords (top right), you would be an excellent ad man for any opponent of Kitzhaber.  You have a gift.
