The chairman of a Washington, D.C.-based legal watchdog group said Saturday that he would challenge a claim filed by ex-President Clinton and his wife Hillary for reimbursement of millions of dollars in legal fees they incurred during the Whitewater probe.
"We'll do it," said Judicial Watch Chairman Larry Klayman. "We have to do it. We can't look the other way."
The subject of the Clintons' Whitewater claim came up on Judicial Watch's weekend radio broadcast during an exchange with guest Dick Morris, the Clinton's one-time top political adviser.
MORRIS: This motion by the Clintons for monies they actually never spent for fighting the special counsel - they paid the lawyers only a million dollars and that all came out of their legal defense fund. They've never given a personal dime to any attorney that represented them.
It's not an adversary preceding. It's before a three judge panel and there will be no presentation by anybody on the other side. Are you guys going to file an amicus brief before the panel?
KLAYMAN: Yes. It's important and it's something we intend to do. These judges will get to make the decision on their own. They tend to be fairly conservative judges but that, of course, doesn't mean anything. We haven't seen any Republicans take a strong stance against Clinton with the exception of Bob Barr.
But we'll do it. We have to do it. We can't look the other way. (End of excerpt)
Morris urged Judicial Watch to compare the Clintons' claim with past reimbursements ordered by the court.
"When Bush (41) got money and Reagan got money (after the Iran Contra probe), it was to reimburse them for out of pocket expenditures," he noted. "(The Clintons) have not paid their lawyers."

Since mainstream reporters are so enamoured of Judicial Watch these days, I trust this news will be turning up on the NY Times and WashPost web sites any minute now.

Presto! I see them morphing back into a conservative D.C.-based legal watchdog group as described by the media before my very eyes!

You forgot to put the phrase "extreme right-wing" in front of conservative watchdog group. Looks like Larry's 15 minutes of fame are over.

I am not surprised. What DOES surprise me is that Klayman didn't jump on the news story that the Pope wasn't going to meet with the Catholic church priests' abuse victims. Maybe Larry couldn't convince any of the abuse victims to stand as litigants against the Pope (and the Church in extension) for causing them additional humiliation and suffering. /sarcasm off.
ANY news story has potential Judicial Watch lawsuit potential as it allows Klayman to gain additional publicity and donations.

"We have to do it. We can't look the other way." Considering the way contributions from his former supporters have dried up, LK finally smelled the coffee. The approval of the WashPost is fleeting, Larry, and not worth the cost.

I don't think I'm alone in wishing this "legal watchdog group" is run over by a mail truck.
