ITHACA -- Ecological responsibility and leadership has always been part of GreenStar Cooperative Market's stated mission.

So when GreenStar heard about the opportunity to partially power the grocery store with wind-generated electricity, market general manager Patrice Jennings said store owners did not hesitate to sign on to a wind power program offered by New York State Electric & Gas and Community Energy Inc.

But apparently not economic efficientcy.

Only in Ithaca, the City of Evil, would a business brag about spending money needlessly.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the first college in New York to incorporate wind power as an energy source on campus, plans to use 441,000 kilowatt hours of wind-power per year, about $50,000 of wind energy, not including the additional $8,800 fee

Coming next, the annual round of protests against tuition hikes, fundraising letters to alumni, lobbyists descending upon Albany for more handouts...

To be sure, there seems to be a lot of wind in Ithaca. Or at least, hot air.

I was at a Durham Bulls game last night. While waiting outside the stadium for our entire group to arrive before proceeding to our skybox a lady walked by with one of those "Ithaca Is Gorges" shirts on. As she walked past me I said "Ithaca is the City of Evil." She either didnt hear me or ignored me.

What's so bad about this? The power company has successfully branded it's product as green and is charging a surplus for that branding. There are customers ready to buy that branding.

This is no different than any other company that works to make their products 'cool' thru branding and marketing. EG Nike commanding high prices for its tennis shoes based on branding distinctions (you will be 'cool' if you wear our shoes) rather than based on actually selling better tennis shoes.

In effect, these folks are selling 'cool' power. Not my cup of tea; but if there's a market for it, producers will find a way to make money off of it. No skin off my back.

I think they should invite in America's number one source of wind power, Jesse Jackson. Recycling his BS could probably match the output of a typical nuclear power plant.

LOL! And unlike a nuclear plant the excess bovine excrement has the added advantage of fertilizing the nearby plant life making for lush green foilage. The Greens should jump on this one. :-))

I have no quarrel with the power company. I simply note that these idiots are willing to pay a premium for their power simply to be "politically correct."

Which seems harmless until you realize that these idiots are the same ones who have infiltrated the Ithaca government and given us idiocy like spending $500,000 to install solar panels on a publicly funded library (in cold, dark, upstate NY).

Can wind power on other taxpayer funded buildings be far away?

To use wind energy will cost GreenStar $3,100 extra per year. The market plans to use wind power for 25 percent of its annual $90,000 electric bill,

25% is a pretty flacid commitment.
GreenStar needs to charge their customers an extra $12,400 per year if they were really serious about this.

Go to Palm Springs and see all the lovely windmills. Actually, its not very pretty. Would you want that in your backyard, to power some city 100s of miles away?
