If you are hunting migratory birds (ducks, dove, etc.), you will want that dowel in your gun. (If a game warden catches you hunting without it, you will be subject to a fine probably higher than the price of your shotgun.) As long as you are not hunting migratory birds, there is no reason to have the dowel installed, so it is nice to know how to remove it and use the full capacity of the gun.

What exactly is your complaint about this convenient feature that allows you to have more capacity in your shotgun, yet still be able to convert it to comply with the wildlife department regulations?

The full text of the Second Amendment:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

This is the only part of the constitution that says the righy shall not be infringed, but that right gets infringed upon the most. THAT IS MY COMPLAINT!!

In Littleton, two teenagers gunned down 13 schoolmates and teachers before killing themselves. The law prohibited the underage Columbine High School killers from owning their private arsenal, including a semiautomatic weapon. But the consistent failure of state legislatures or the federal government to implement strong enforcement mechanisms -- like universal background checks, the licensing of gun owners and firearm registration -- made it easy for them to get their guns. All it took was a friend to pick up the murder weapons at a local gun show -- a friend who later testified that she never would have bought the guns if she had been subject to a background check.

In the Erfurt case, Germany's gun laws were also insufficient to keep firearms out of the hands of a disturbed youth. Despite a history of troubles at school, a 17-year-old was legally authorized to own the 9mm handgun and pump-action rifle that he used to kill 17 people, including students, teachers, a policeman and himself. He obtained a German firearms license with relative ease -- no psychological examination required.

What she is very carefully not saying is that German already had all of the laws - universal background checks, the licensing of gun owners and firearm registration, that she says would have prevented Columbine.

When I was taking German in High School my teacher mentioned that Germans are not allowed to keep their own guns at home but must keep them at a gun club.

Unfortunately, Bush has already said he would sign it if it came before him. It'll have to be stopped in Congress if it is to be stopped. The next Congressional elections will be crucial. If Dems take the House, expect a new bill, perhaps with even stricter language. If Repubs keep the House, expect to still have to fight to stiffen the spines of the masses of amoeboid Republicans in Congress.

Aw, he just says that to avoid the debate until the bill actually comes up. Remember, he made conceal carry legal for everybody in the second most populous state in the Union.

Look for some Pan-Islamic murder at our gun-free zones.

IMHO, American citzens should consider it their Minute Man duty to have a 5+ capacity shotgun, with 25-50+ rounds in boxes, in their cars and offices.

Just wait on 911 and 9/11 will come calling.

Just remember the so called "Assault Weapons Ban" expires in September 2004 unless it is renewed by Bush and Congress (which it won't be).

LOL!! You have got ot be out of your mind. I guarantee you Bush will re-sign it. There is no chance he wont. None.

I oppose any infringement on my second amendment rights as well. However, I don't see a restriction on the number of shots while hunting migratory birds to be such an infringement.

Then he can go to hell. He's a wolf in sheeps clothing. Nothing he has done has promoted anything conservative other than tax cuts.

regardless of where a person is BORN, it's what they believe, how they act and what foolishness that they spout that is IMPORTANT!

being born in a southron state does NOT make one wonderful;neither does being northernborn make you a damnyankee.

as an example, wee willie was born in AR, but his outlook is scalawag and/or damnyankee. on the other hand, COL Quantrell, late of the 4th MO Partisan Rangers was born in NYC;no finer CSA guerrilla commander ever drew breath.

a place of birth in the southland no more makes you a dixie patriot than it makes you a Methodist.

Read number 86.
And I'm going to be sure not to post to you anymore because of your anti-American attitude.

Im not a bird hunter, so the wooden dowel thing is confusing. Is this to prevent the pump action from being used, that is, when hunting migratory birds you can only single shot (maually load) each round?

No, it is to reduce the number of rounds that can be held in the magazine and chamber to a total of 3. It is very easy and convenient to remove when not hunting and reinstall prior to hunting.

On my Mossberg 12-ga pump, for example, I simply unscrew the knob at the front of the pump chamber, point the gun down so that the dowel sticks out, pull it out and then reattach the knob and tighten it. Now I can load 5 in the magazine plus one in the chamber. When I go hunting, I remove the knob, insert the dowel, and reattach the knob. With the dowel inserted, the plug (that pushes the shells to the chamber) will only move forward far enough for two shells in the mag, so I can load a total of three (one in the chamber plus two in the mag).

Thanks. So, I guess if you need to empty a magazine at a flock of geese you can't do it, unless you bring along 2 more guns! :-0

That's the problem with gun owners! Too many are willing to accept 'reasonable gun laws'. That's why we're in the predicament we're in right now. Not to mention it sucks having to pay $100 for a decent capacity 'pre-ban' magazine.

It doesn't need to be wooden; however it does need to be between the stopper and the spring,(require disassembly to remove) so the dud shells won't count.

I used to do quite a bit of waterfowl hunting and I had a very good Lab. Every time I went out to our blind or Goose pit the first thing I would do is send the dog out to retrieve. 9 out of 10 times he would bring back at least two live birds that were wounded. The reason that you can't trust most waterfowl hunters to have more than 3 shots is that they will take them and wing a bird without killing it. When the bird is flying at 50-70 mph by the time you take a 4th shot it is well outside the 40 yard kill range. In fact most third shots are outside that range as well.
