In a tactical misstep, Mayor Michael Bloomberg boasted inaccurately Friday that the City Council speaker supports his sweeping new anti-smoking bill. The legislative leader, Gifford Miller, later emphasized he has yet to back it.

Bloomberg's latest turn against smoking is far-reaching and would make it illegal to light up even in workplaces, which now have designated smoking areas. The bill would also apply to outdoor cafes, where smoking is currently permitted.

"Bloomberg apparently jumped the gun on his morning radio show Friday when he said Miller "certainly" backs the bill.

"Miller said. "I'm not committed to it."

"More pointedly, a Miller aide added: "We're not thrilled with Bloomberg's little tactic. Whoever his handlers are, steered him wrong. It's a long, rocky road for this bill and we aren't rubber-stamping it."

Bloomy never should have stopped toking( if he did). I would think the Constitutional thing to do would be to let the OWNER hang a SMOKING or NON-SMOKING sign on the door and let the free enterprise system take it from there.

Let the market place will settle the issue, not the nanny state

Glad you pointed that out, Khepera! I neglected to point out about the poll!

In our emails this morning, Cherner is circulating this Newsday poll to his national anti-smoker troops and telling them to vote, fast and implicitly often.

Go to it, guys.

Also email Gifford Miller protesting the ban.

That's cute. Well, what do you think "I'M" doing! Sitting here on my butt as well. hehe!

Sure happy you prompted me to post that poll though. It's turning around quit nicely. I bet old Joe Cherner is having fits. haha!

Anything that gives Joe Cherner fits is a good thing in my book!!!!!!

An interesting aside about Cherner. According to some of my friends, who would know, he is as well liked in the main-stream (read non-vocal) homosexual community as he is with smokers.

From the article:

"You've got to believe in the litigious society we live in that there's going to be suits against owners of restaurants and bars by their employers(sic) saying 'you allowed an environmental condition that hurt my health,'" Bloomberg said."

Can they prove it, or doesn't it matter? Goes to show that we need tort reform more than smoking reform.

OH YES! I FORGOT! Ole Joey is a homosexual raising kids! And ole Joey is head of the Anti-Smoking Coalition in New York! I guess he can be GAY but we better not SMOKE, eh???

He DOES have a web site in here, Folks, showing his live in LOVEMAN and his "adopted" kids. Oh yea. This is a good one.

I'm not one to make someone look bad, but in THIS case, you got to fight fire with fire! THE HEAD OF THIS SMOKING BAN IN NEW YORK AND THE U.S. FOLKS, IS A GAY MAN! And Joe? You don't like it? Well then, why do you have your "home web site" in here for ALL TO SEE???!!!!

Who knows, robert! It's just RINO Bloomberg putting more spin on what he WANTS to happen! He can spew any words and figures he wants. He thinks he is above reproach!

And if the health coalition gets ahold of a weak minded bar tender (like some flight attendents), they are always open up to law suits.

Doesn't make it right, though. I worked in bars and hung out in smoke filled bars and discos when I was growing up! That was before the big smoke eaters.

And I'M an old broad. heh! Wonder how I got to be this old........what with all the deceitful lies flying around about second hand smoke!
