TEHRAN -- The U.S. Congress on Tuesday ratified the sale of four AWACS to Turkey, the Turkish daily ***Zaman*** reported on Wednesday.

According to an agreement signed between Ankara and Washington in April, Turkey will buy four AWACS worth around 1.1 billion dollars from Boeing Co.

Turkey could raise its demand from four to six spy planes.

It has been said that money for the purchase of the planes will come from the Support Fund for Turkish Defense Industry.

The Support Fund for the Turkish Defense Industry is an official foundation which provides fund for some Turkish defense expenditures through imposition of tariffs and special taxes from some goods and services.

This is the biggest arms purchase by Turkey in the past ten years.

By purchase of these spy planes Turkey would be able to monitor not only airspace and the Aegean Sea it would find access to military movements in the Middle East, Balkans and the Caucasus.

Looks to me like a bribe incentive to help take down Iraq.

Yeah, I think your right. Is someone forging legislation while every Congress critter is out of office? Very strange.

Didn't Turkey so no to Iraq? I guess arming those that are "not with us" has the advantage of knowing how mush weaponry they have when we have to attack them.

The simple solution is to take our freedoms away

It looks like market value, and to a NATO ally. I don't know why we would turn them down even without Iraq on the horizon.

No it didn't. The AWACs is a specific model of AEW&C (Airborne Early warning and Control) aircraft operated but the USA, the UK, NATO and Saudi Arabia. It is based on the Boeing 707, which is now out of production. Any sold to Turkey would have come from USAF stocks.

What Turkey is purchasing is an AEW&C aircraft based on the Boeing 737.

And old news, nothing to do with Iraq.

Turkey issued the Request for Proposals in 1998 and selected the 737 MESA in November 2000.

The request for the sale had to be on the floor for a specified period of time and unchallenged, which expired on Tuesday, making the sale possible. The request had been on the floor since before the Congress went into recess.

First of all, it's not taking down Iraq, but Saddam.

Second of all, four planes at 275 million a piece is hardly a bribe.

Did I misunderstand your post?

I checked out your link and the articles on police state. Paranoia and ignorance are the primary catalysts to make one happen for you.

Thanks for the clarification... I thought it may have been a time delay between approval and publishing in the Congressional Record or something like that.
