" But archaeologists still puzzle over why the 15 latrines unearthed in a dig at Kintore, Aberdeenshire - 15 miles from the site of the battle - were dug in pairs. Theories range from a Roman liking for military symmetry to the suggestion that they simply enjoyed a good conversation. "

We all know about Roman practices.... maybe they were in pairs with a gloryhole between them? blah.

ROMAN soldiers went to war on egg and pizza

I'm highly sceptical about this story! Everyone knows how long it takes a room of people to decided on what toppings to order now magnify that by a whole army! They'd still be arguing...............

Two hole johns aren’t uncommon – it cuts down on long lines. I’ve even seen 8 and 10 holers in Nam.

Fascinating article but just because there were two holes doesn't mean that two guys went to the bathroom at the same time. Even if they did that wouldn't be very secure. If they're both sitting and attending to business couldn't someone could sneak up on them?

Tomato sauce was a recent addition.

Ancient Pizza in was often bread, olive oil and various topings or seeds like rye and sesamee.

Drachmas, obols, talents are Greek coinage, don't think a talent was an actual unit of coinage, sesterces, solidus (sp?) are Roman coins I believe.

Sponges on a sticks, kept in a common bowl in the middle is what I remember from a National Geographic illustration of a reconstruction of the latrine in a Roman camp.

They could be facing in opposite directions as they do their business so as to watch over a greater area.
