They're all over the country. I typed in "Governor's School" and found respectable sounding math/technical schools. But I also saw personal horror stories from kids on their home pages. One was of the NC Governor's School.
Apparently they're run by the state board of ed. Be very wary. It wouldn't hurt to talk to alumni. Maybe you could ask for an alumni list?
I was there.I attended Arkansas Governors' School in 1992 when this was written (while X42 was running for Prez the first time). I don't have time to respond to all this right now, but I will say the truth is somewhere in the middle. The whole thing was slanted hard to the left, but it wasn't really brainwashing. Overall, I'd say it was a positive experience, but there were also obvious problems with the way it was structured.
If anyone has any particular questions you want a first-hand account on, fire away.
Here's the Virginia site. It's run by the Virginia Department of Education.
On one of my previous posts a parent mentions that the seed money (three years) for these programs came from the Carnegie Foundation. This makes sense because the testimonials here ranging from 1983-1996 describe a similar format ("no absolutes," "we are the elite," "no one will understand this," PC curriculum). It seems that the Department of Ed takes over the operation after the seed money runs out.
So how are these schools funded today? Do they have a line item in the education budget? When were they first authorized? Was legislation put forward in various states in the same year? I'd like to know.
