Hatfill On U.N. List as Arms Inspector

Dr. Steven Hatfill, the FBI's "person if interest" in the anthrax investigation may have been fired from his job at Louisiana State University but he could end up working for the United Nations, poking around in Iraq as a weapons inspector.

According to Britain's Times, the U.N. arms inspection unit; UNMOVIC "now has a roster of 220 trained inspectors from 44 countries - including Steven Hatfill, the former US government researcher whose home has been searched repeatedly by the FBI in connection with the investigation into last year's anthrax attacks."

Hatfill lost his $150,000 a year job at LSU after the Justice Department told LSU he could not work on any projects funded by the federal government, in effect ordering LSU to fire him since the department he was to head was dependent upon federal dollars.

That won't work if the U.N. avails itself of Hatfill's considerable expertise - the Times reports that "The United States will find it hard to control the United Nations weapons inspectors in Iraq as it once did because of changes made after a US spying scandal. In the new body, Americans play a reduced role in planning inspection missions and, unlike its predecessor [UNSCOM] it will not use U.S. Government staff. "

Or, presumably, pay any attention to the F.B.I.'s near manic obsession with a man the Bureau admits is not a suspect in the anthrax case and against whom they have not one scintilla of evidence that he was in any way involved in the attacks that killed five people.

I've always thought there was a lot more to this story. This goings on with Hatfill may have just been to get him "qualified" for duty with the UN, huh? (tinfoil)

This has the scent of an old story. Why it's resurrected now with this skulky tone is anyone's guess. Probably just laziness and sensationalism--the Siamese twins of most media. A UK paper prints it and Newsmax repeats it.

If I recall correctly: Hatfill appears on this roster of names for UN inspectors not because he's been selected for anything, but because he submitted his name some time ago when the UN put out a call for candidates. He was seeking a job.
