Daschle, Johnson showing true colors with forest votes (Letter to Editor)

Dear Editor:
Senators Johnson and Daschle are at it again. Shortly after helping pass legislation to speed up forest management on the BHNF they flip flopped and voted against allowing any debate on Sen. Craig's Forest Health Amendment. A year ago, at Daschle's Forest Summit, both had said that the system needed a major overhaul. The vote should come as no surprise since the Sierra Club was against it. Johnson and Daschle have consistently supported Sierra Club positions. Sierra Club, in turn, is spending millions trashing John Thune.
Patterned after the Beaver Park legislation, this amendment contained sweeping changes that would help end the gridlock that has snarled federal forest management and left 70 million acres at risk from fire and insects. Speaking of Beaver Park, it did not take Daschle much time to recant his Beaver Park recusal once he found out about Thune's plan to introduce legislation to take care of Beaver Park and Norbeck.

There is an old saying "you can tell a lot about a person by the people who support them." Johnson and Daschle are strongly supported by the Sierra Club. That should be enough to send chills down anyone's back that cares about our national forests.

I guess putting the question to South Dakota directly is the best route...

I don't understand why the good folks of South Dakota keep sending these socialists to represent them. Is it only because they bring home pork projects or agriculture spending? What is it?

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not ridiculing you guys. Heck, I live next door in Marxist Minnesota and the only explanation I can offer for our disorder is inbreeding and deep-seated Scandanavian socialist traditions.

So where is a candidate willing to fetch home the bacon while still serving hard-line conservatism?
