Kirk's new ad supportive of Bush
Cornyn says rival's policy proposals are 'all over the map'
10/08/2002
AUSTIN - In a new TV ad, Democratic Senate candidate Ron Kirk disputes Republican John Cornyn's criticisms of him and says he supports President Bush's efforts to lower taxes and improve education.
"If a quarter of what John Cornyn says about me were true, my mama would disown me," Mr. Kirk says in the commercial that began airing Monday.
On hand to unveil the ad was Willie Mae Kirk, Mr. Kirk's 80-year-old mother, a retired teacher. "I will still support him regardless of what Cornyn says. He's my child. He's a good person, an excellent candidate," she said.
Mr. Cornyn, the state attorney general, has worked to show himself as the candidate in line with the president's agenda and to cast Mr. Kirk as a liberal who wouldn't work with Mr. Bush.
Mr. Kirk, a former Dallas mayor, describes himself as a moderate. In his ad, he says he supports the president's efforts in lowering taxes, reforming education, fighting terrorism and building partnerships between government and faith-based institutions.
Surrounded by schoolchildren in part of his 30-second spot, Mr. Kirk says the election is not about political parties or the president but about making the best decisions for the next generation.
Mr. Cornyn, campaigning Monday in Dallas to promote his health care and prescription drug initiatives, noted that Mr. Bush backs him for Senate and said the Kirk ad lacks credibility.
"Mr. Kirk has frankly been all over the map on issues like tax cuts, national security, homeland security, trade promotion authority and confirmation of judges," Mr. Cornyn said.
Cornyn spokesman Dave Beckwith issued a statement attempting to show that Mr. Kirk associates with senators who oppose Mr. Bush.
Mr. Beckwith said that on a questionnaire Mr. Kirk filled out for the group Council for a Livable World he identified Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, as the senator his voting pattern would be closest to on military and foreign policy.
The Cornyn statement said Mr. Levin is "leading the opposition to President Bush's attempt to forge a bipartisan consensus to disarm Iraq."
Mr. Levin says he favors using U.S troops against Saddam Hussein only as part of a United Nations coalition.

Mr. Kirk has said Mr. Hussein's regime should end and that he favors building international support for that goal. Last week, Mr. Kirk said he supports a proposed congressional resolution that would give Mr. Bush authority to use military force against Iraq.
Mr. Kirk has said he would support Mr. Bush in a unilateral decision to attack Iraq if the president "believes Saddam Hussein has access to chemical weapons and biological weapons and plans to deploy those and the U.N. falters in responding to the president's call."
As for making the Bush tax cut permanent, Mr. Kirk has said he would like to "if we have the funds to do so," said his spokesman, Robert Gibbs.
Mr. Beckwith responded: "Today, Kirk is with Mr. Bush for lowering taxes. On other days, he's called Bush's tax cuts 'devastating' and making them permanent 'irresponsible.' "
The new ad, the first directly paid for by the Kirk campaign, started airing in Houston, Dallas, Waco, Austin and in the Texarkana, Tyler-Longview and Beaumont areas. Another Kirk ad began Sept. 19 and was funded by Democratic Party money.
Mr. Kirk, a former Dallas mayor, describes himself as a moderate.
Translated, moderate means a LIBERAL. Stick a fork in Kirk, he's done.

There ya go. They think it is their money. Uh-oh ! There's that "is" word again.
I love it when I hear Bush talkin' about making the tax cut permanent, etc. and says that some folks in Washington think it's their money. "It the taxpayers money," he says.
Especially when they can get away with the Torricelli-Lautenburg maneuver.
I hope SCOTUS throws CFR out. CFR goes into effect the day after this election, I believe.

As with most polls, the forgot to calculate the Dim's "fudge" factor. To retain any sort of credibility they will need to factor in the dead Dims and crossover Dims. Crossover Dims being those that will cross over the street to cast their vote again and again and again... ; )
I hope the city folks will be keeping an eye on the cesspools for the rest of us.
