This year California needed a real choice in the governor's campaign and a Republican candidate who could offer a credible alternative to the mediocre incumbent, Democrat Gray Davis. Instead it got Bill Simon, an empty suit who can't even mount a decent smear on his opponent.

I agree. As an outsider (Zonie), it appears Simon has shot his feet so many times he is no longer able to walk. Whether through stipidity, in-eptness, or bad luck, he is no longer viable. California is seemingly getting what it deserves!

Anyone up on California politics -- a crowd to which Simon plainly doesn't belong -- knows that a picture of Davis accepting a campaign check is about as remarkable as the sun coming up in the morning.

Yeah, everybody knows Davi$ is really just the nicest guy and bestest governor we could possibly ever have. It's all the evil conservatives and republicans that are to blame . Got it! /sarcasm

Well, as a matter of fact, Simon did NOT make this accusation during the debate. He was blindsided by an interviewer after the debate, and unfortunately forgot the cardinal rule, never to trust the media.

How many days can they continue running this inherently trivial story? Yes, I know, probably for the next ten years, just like the famous "potatoe" story. Once a liberal gets his teeth into your ankle, he never lets go.

it's too bad the media dosn't subject Davis's negative commercials where he makes accusations about Simon to the same scrutiny as they have this photo.....why haven't they done that?

Blindsided? The actual cardinal rule that Simon forgot was one he should have known as a prosecutor: Don't ask a question you don't already know the answer to. This was like asking O.J. to put on the glove in front of the jury in the middle of the trial.

If Simon and his handlers had looked at the photo and done a little research before claiming they had proof that Davis took an illegal contribution from COPS, they would not have come out looking like doofi (that's the plural of doofus).

Whatever he's paying it doesn't look like it's enough.

Simon should consider himself in good company; they called Bush an "empty suit" too.
