Kirk, Cornyn to use debate for wide appeal
10/18/2002
By TODD J. GILLMAN and GROMER JEFFERS JR. / The Dallas Morning News
Heading into their first debate Friday night, Senate contenders John Cornyn and Ron Kirk face the same delicate balancing act.
The Republican wants to wrap himself in the president's glow without coming off as a White House dupe. The Democrat needs to attract Texans who idolize the president, so he needs to avoid getting painted into the Hillary Clinton-Ted Kennedy-Tom Daschle corner.
Yet each candidate has hewn close to his party's agenda, from Social Security and taxes to the war on terrorism and a host of other issues. Points of disagreement between Mr. Cornyn and President Bush are as scarce as those between Mr. Kirk and the Democratic leadership.
Asked for five examples of differences, Mr. Cornyn came up with two, Mr. Kirk just one.
That, experts say, could pose a problem as many voters take their first hard look at the men who hope to take a turn in the seat held by the likes of Lyndon Johnson, John Tower and, for a few more months, Phil Gramm.
"It's a danger to be thought too much of a toady," said University of Texas political scientist Roderick Hart, "especially following someone like Phil Gramm, who had a real sense of independence."
Both candidates say they'll have no trouble stepping out from the shadows of their respective parties.
"The most important thing is whether I'm an independent thinker, and a watchdog for the taxpayer," Mr. Cornyn said. "I'm sure as time goes by there'll be occasions when we disagree. As a friend, I will use the opportunity that friendship provides to discuss our differences."
The issues Mr. Cornyn cited as significant points of disagreement with Mr. Bush are the secrecy with which the administration developed its energy policy, and the deep cuts the White House proposed in Texas' share of federal highway funds.
"He has a responsibility to the whole country. I have a responsibility to represent Texans," Mr. Cornyn said. "I want that money restored."
He added that Texas is routinely shortchanged when it comes to financial burdens related to the border with Mexico - straining budgets for roads, law enforcement and health care.
Mr. Kirk said it won't be easy for his opponent to come out from Mr. Bush's shadow.
"I'm going to talk about issues of competency and experience and the need to address the issue of turning this economy around," he said. "I expect John Cornyn to talk about his relationship with the president."
He named the estate tax as the sole issue on which he disagrees with Mr. Daschle. Unlike Democratic leaders, Mr. Kirk supports permanent repeal.
"It's hard to go to the public and say, 'You're going to work hard, earn money, pay taxes on what you earn and then, when you die, we're going to tax you again,' " he said.
Mr. Bush has said Mr. Kirk, if elected, would be an "obstructionist" like Mr. Daschle, the Senate majority leader. The former Dallas mayor said he had no other major differences with Mr. Daschle or national Democrats.
"He's a nice man," Mr. Kirk said of the South Dakotan who controls the Senate agenda thanks to a one-seat Democratic majority. "He hasn't asked me to do anything. He just told me to run my race and win."
Last spring, Mr. Kirk urged Mr. Daschle to act more quickly on the president's judicial nominees, but within a few months he was echoing Senate Democrats' opposition to the appointment of Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen to a federal appeals court.
"I'm not going to argue with reducing the deficit, balancing the budget, growing the economy, putting more Americans to work and having a low unemployment rate," Mr.Kirk said.
"I suppose you can argue we should have been much more aggressive in dealing with bin Laden, but I think that would be unfair because I don't think anybody thought they would do that."
Aides say neither candidate has spent much time drilling for Friday's debate in Houston, sponsored by KHOU-TV and the Houston Chronicle . They will meet two more times, Wednesday in Dallas and Thursday in Brownsville.
Asked whether he planned any mock debates with a Cornyn stand-in, Mr. Kirk waved off the idea. "I don't need to do all of that," he said. "I'm ready for this guy."
Before his primary debates against Rep. Ken Bentsen of Houston and teacher Victor Morales, Mr. Kirk visited spas and received pedicures. He planned a visit to the YMCA on Friday to relax.
Cornyn spokesman Dave Beckwith said his boss had no mock debates with a Kirk stand-in, either, and preparations were minimal.
"Clearly you want to do well in these things. There are always a few unexpected questions, but most of the issues in these things are relatively familiar," he said.
Dr. Hart said that with three debates ahead, both men should be mindful of the basketball adage: "When you're behind you don't try to get all the points back at one time. ... Pacing is really important."

Hmm?? This debate is TONIGHT, but I don't find anything that tells when it is or where I can watch or hear the debate broadcast. I'll try to find this information, but in the meantime, if you have the broadcast for Dallas area and/or Texas statewide broadcast networks, etc., can you please post it here? Thanks.
I do see a broadcast schedule for later debates, and I'll post that information on this article shortly.

NBC 5 Exclusive: Voter's Poll Part II
Although the margin has narrowed slightly, Rick Perry continues to enjoy a comfortable lead in his race against Tony Sanchez, Jr., according to our poll of 600 likely voters throughout Texas.
Also, nearly half of those polled said they think both campaigns are using "unfair" campaign ads.
The poll was conducted from October 8 through October 13 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percent.

Early voting may begin on Sat. Oct. 19 in some counties across Texas... You need to check locally to find out if they will begin or wait until Monday the 21st. But otherwise on Monday, Oct. 21 early voting will be in place across the entire state...
Monday, October 21, 2002 (15th day before election day)
First day to vote early in person, unless the early voting clerk orders early voting by personal appearance to start on either Saturday, October 19, 2002, or Sunday, October 20, 2002. (Secs. 85.001, 85.006).
Example Harris County is open 1 to 6 p.m. both Sat. and Sun.

That's kind of what I was afraid of, since neither Cornyn nor Kirk practiced for this one. I guess tonight IS their practice. Like a pre-season game, huh? Oh, well.
Thanks......

I watched it. I had never seen Kirk live on television before.
I had the image of someone who was slick and charismatic before the debate, and Kirk didn't quite live up to my expectations. However, this former mayor of Dallas compares favorably to our miserable Houston mayor, who is a total idiot.
Kirk is no idiot. He was pretty quick on his feet and did a fairly credible job. He was terrible on the issues, always preferring to turn the talk into "feelings" and "working with Republicans." But he did a pretty good job in switching the subject.
Cornyn did a better job, in both answering the questions that were asked, and in going on the offensive. He certainly didn't hurt himself tonight, and I don't think Kirk gave any reasons why he would be better than Cornyn.
As usual, they brought in "undecided voters" to ask questions, all of whom clearly were Kirk supporters, and there wasn't a single Republican on the panel of journalists asking questions. Consequently, the questions were framed from a liberal perspective. At least we didn't get the reparations question this time.
In general, I think the debate was probably pretty boring to the average viewer. I enjoyed it, only because I'm a political junkie.

Well, I saw your post and tuned in about 25 minutes after 7 and they were goin'. I saw a little bit, and then the phone rang. My Dad is traveling out west and my cousin got a call from him so he called to let me know he had arrived safely in Seattle, etc......(and then my good buddy zapped me for an MSN conversation. So I was a bit distracted for the short time I tried to see it. :O( ).
Anyway, what little I saw was pretty much what I've seen on the Internet News coverage. Kirk mentioned Cornyn and Enron (barf) and Cornyn asked Kirk about him being on the lawyers payroll (the $227k/yr salary).
Thanks for the heads up that C-Span will cover it at 6 a.m. !!
I DO wanna see the debate and I'll certainly check it out in the morning !!

I think that time would be 6:00 a.m. eastern, but I'm not sure..... just a guess. Their schedule may have it set up when it will rerun. Time to break out he tape.... too early in the morning to listen to that discussion. LOL

Why in the world did they hold these debates on a Friday night? Don't they know that at least half the state (including myself) are at their local high school football games?

It was a "practice" debate. Neither had rehearsed prior to this debate. There will be TWO more, both next week. Wednesday in Dallas, and Thursday in Brownsville. Both will get TV Coverage. See post #2 for coverage in your area.....
Here is the article about last night's debate I just posted:

heh heh ! You were right. It was 6 a.m. EDT. I caught it @ 5 a.m. here, but there was a pretty good rain here, causing "rain fade" through my DirecTV Satellite. The broadcast was breaking up a little as a result, but I did catch some more of it. Thanks.
