[history]
A second California condor hatched in the wild has been found dead here, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said.
The death of the 5-month-old bird leaves just one chick of the original three left in the wild. Two weeks ago, the first condor to hatch in the wild in nearly two decades was found dead.

Piston powered helicopters use fuel that contains lead to boost the octane rating. The Forest Service landing helicopters in the condor habitat is probably the source of the lead. Your tax dollars at work.

Awesome birds. 9 foot wing span. I saw one in the wild once, about 10 feet away. Watched it take off and fly away. Looked like a jetliner. Incredible.

Sometimes animals just die.
Can anybody confirm the story about the seals rehabilitated after the Exxon Valdez spill? It went something like this:
These were the first two seals to be realeased. They had been cleaned and rehabilitated over a period of several months, at a cost of over $30,000 each. A huge crowd of tree-huggers gathered for a ceremony that included a marching band and proclaimations by VIPs. Upon being put in the water, the pair had not swam 100yds from the dock when they were attacked and consumed by a kiler whale in full view of said tree-huggers.

The father of the chick that died earlier this month is missing and presumed dead."Tastes just like chicken."

At least anti-freeze wasn't involved this time, that's progress, isn't it?

I'm surprised the Forest Service isn't blaming lead bullet hoarding right wing extremist hunters with bad aim.

Shouldn't hunters be using silver bullets? After all, silver isn't toxic like lead and it is useful if you are attacked by a werewolf. And with silver prices down...
(Okay, I admit, I stand to gain if silver prices go up).

Awesome birds. 9 foot wing span. I saw one in the wild once, about 10 feet away. You were very lucky to see one up close. In 1983 I saw 13 (of the 21 then in the wild) flying together in Los Padres Natinal Forest, and it was quite a sight. Too bad they haven't survived as well as the Turkey Vultures.

Too bad they haven't survived as well as the Turkey Vultures. It was an unforgettable experience. I agree with you. I always loved these great birds and wished they would get on better than they do.
