Kirk, Cornyn run on out-of-state cash

Cornyn criticizes Kirk's sources but also gets money from outside Texas

10/23/2002

By WAYNE SLATER and PETE SLOVER / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN - While Republican Senate candidate John Cornyn has chided Democratic challenger Ron Kirk for seeking contributions far from Texas, he's been fairly bullish himself about mining for money outside the Lone Star State.

Campaign reports indicate that Mr. Kirk has raised more money from outside Texas, but both candidates have attracted big names and big bucks from the glass canyons of New York to the bright lights of Hollywood.

A review of campaign filings found that Mr. Kirk has raised more than $2 million - about one-third of his total - from out of state.

Mr. Cornyn has collected $1.6 million from outside Texas - 20 percent of his total - including sums rivaling Mr. Kirk's fund-raising efforts in California and Washington, D.C.

More Politics

"It's quite clear they've raised their share of out-of-state money," said Kirk spokesman Robert Gibbs. "In Los Angeles or Las Vegas, they've pulled in their fair share."

Dave Beckwith, a Cornyn spokesman, said the issue is how much time Mr. Kirk has spent outside the state and the type of supporters he has attracted to his candidacy.

"It's a question of Texas values, which Cornyn is pursuing, against out-of-state values, particularly East and West Coast values," Mr. Beckwith said. "Kirk has not only raised more money, he has raised a higher percentage of his money from out of state."

The issue of out-of-state fund-raisers has flared for months in the Senate race and could come up when Mr. Cornyn and Mr. Kirk meet Wednesday in Dallas for a statewide televised debate.

Celebrity support

Both candidates have used big names to attract money to their campaigns.

Kirk fund-raisers have featured former President Bill Clinton and a host of Hollywood stars. Mr. Cornyn has recruited radio commentator Rush Limbaugh and actor Charlton Heston to headline events in Texas to boost his campaign treasury.

Thursday's debate
- The candidates for governor, Rick Perry and Tony Sanchez, meet at 7 p.m Thursday for their final televised debate.
- They will be followed at 8 p.m. by the lieutenant governor candidates, David Dewhurst and John Sharp, and at 8:30 p.m. by the attorney general candidates, Greg Abbott and Kirk Watson.
- It will be broadcast on KERA (Channel 13), Texas Cable News (Channel 38) and KDTN/KERA2 (Channel 2) for Spanish translation.
"Everyone recognizes that running statewide in Texas is an expensive proposition that requires raising money," Mr. Gibbs said. "Clearly both candidates have realized it takes contributions both inside and outside of Texas."

Mr. Kirk had raised nearly $7 million through Oct. 1, compared with $8.4 million for Mr. Cornyn, according to reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission. Federal law limits contributions at $1,000 per election cycle from individuals and $5,000 from political action committees.

Money sources

A computer-assisted review of campaign contributions to date found the following:

Both candidates have found Washington, D.C., and the surrounding region a prime area to raise money. Mr. Kirk has collected $956,000 from the nation's capital, Mr. Cornyn $649,000. Both candidates raised virtually equal amounts - about $360,000 - from Washington-area political action committees.

Mr. Kirk raised more than his Republican opponent in California, but not by much. The former Dallas mayor collected $263,000 from the Golden State while the Texas attorney general took in $210,000.

Although Mr. Cornyn has touted his support from the White House, Mr. Kirk has attracted presidential backing of his own - $1,000 from actor Bradley Whitford, who plays Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman on the television show The West Wing.

Other notable contributors to Mr. Kirk's campaign include entertainer Barbra Streisand, actress and Dallas native Morgan Fairchild, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu and music mogul David Geffen.

Mr. Cornyn's contributor list is replete with corporate executives, including the chairmen of Gap Inc., Williams-Sonoma and the Morton restaurant chain.

With Democrats holding a one-vote margin in the Senate, both political parties have taken an extreme interest in Texas. The White House wants to keep the Republican seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Phil Gramm, while Democrats want to win the post and embarrass President Bush in his home state.

Both campaigns have benefited from unregulated "soft money" contributions to political parties, which have helped finance a flurry of television commercials in the Senate race.

A review of "hard money" contributions, strictly limited by federal law, indicates that Mr. Kirk has attracted widespread labor union and trial lawyer support, while Mr. Cornyn has built his fund-raising lead with the help of corporate executives and groups such as the National Rifle Association.

Although the individual contribution limit is $1,000, not all well-known supporters give that much.

For example, Cecile Richards, daughter of former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, contributed $500 to Mr. Kirk's campaign

Mindy Tucker, who left Texas to work with the Bush campaign and now is spokeswoman at the Republican National Committee in Washington, backed Mr. Cornyn with a contribution of $50.

Somehow I get the feeling that the Dallas Morning News is blatantly slanting this article to smear Cornyn. From that statement, I think they must be counting "Out-of-State" even when it's held IN Texas. Didn't Charlton Heston raise funds for Cornyn in Dallas or Houston, not out of Texas?? And I KNOW Kirk has GONE out-of-state to New York to get money with Clinton.

Also, don't forget the Texas Senate DEBATE #2 is tonight !!

The Dallas Morning Snooze wants Kirk in the Senate and preach each day on why he must be there. Funny thing is that they get less subtile each time a poll comes out with Ronny behind.

You did huh? LOL !

Hey, I just got a call from Phil Gramm !! He was urging Texans to get out and vote early !...and to support the GOP candidates, of course. And he wanted to thank all Texans for supporting him during his 20-odd years in office. He ended it with a great comment about keeping Texas the Greatest State in the Greatest Country in the world, and he said that he loved us ! It was recorded, of course, but a great message nonetheless !

Yep, we were right. Heston came to Texas to campaign for Cornyn, while Kirk went to New York and other places outside of Texas and the Dallas Morning News considers BOTH of those raising money from out-of-state ! I oughta write the DMN a scathing letter for their obvious bias and smear. Sheesh ! I wish the the clintoons HAD come to Texas to campaign for Kirk. Then he'd be 30 points or more behind in the polls instead of only 10 !

Cornyn supports more checks at gun shows
Charlton Heston campaigns for John Cornyn

Kirk favors enforcing existing laws rather than making new ones

09/22/2002

By GROMER JEFFERS Jr. / The Dallas Morning News

Excerpt:

In the race to elect Texas' next senator, it's the moderate Democrat who says unlicensed sellers at gun shows don't need to run background checks on buyers, and the conservative Republican who says a law should be passed to give them more scrutiny.

Republican John Cornyn supports more precautions for dealers at shows, and Democrat Ron Kirk opposes them.

"I believe we need to enforce our current gun laws rather than create new ones," Mr. Kirk said.

Mr. Cornyn, the state attorney general, thinks the checks are necessary.

"They should allow it to be done without delay," he responded.

The candidates were asked their views on guns after appearances Saturday by Charlton Heston at Southfork Ranch and in Longview, where he campaigned for Mr. Cornyn.

I was a little disappointed in Cornyn's performance in the debates last night. He seemed to evade questions in an almost Clintonesque fashion.

On the other hand Kirk easily (fake) made himself look like a conservative. (Of course we all know he'll tow the Daschle line).

I hope he still wins, but I am afraid he lost on points last night, while the Hou. debate was a draw, or a slight win for Cornyn.
