Dallas man sentenced in TX Joint Terrorism Task Force probe (donor to DEM Ron Kirk's campaigns!)

Businessman sentenced for violating order to stop exporting to Saudi Arabia Wed Oct 23, 3:34 AM ET

DALLAS - The owner of a computer company has been sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay US$281,892.52 restitution for shipping computer hardware, software and telecommunications equipment to Saudi Arabia after the U.S. Commerce Department (news - web sites) ordered him to stop.

Ihsan "Sammy" Elashyi, 42, of Richardson, Texas, faced a maximum sentence of up to 50 years in prison and a fine of US$1.25 million after pleading guilty in June to four counts of a 39-count indictment, including charges of money laundering and wire fraud.

In pronouncing sentence Monday, U.S. District Judge Sam A. Lindsay also ordered that Elashyi forfeit a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, a 2001 BMW motorcycle and three Rolex watches.

Elashyi, a U.S. citizen, founded Tetrabal Corp., which sold and exported computer and telecommunications equipment. Most of the customers were in the Middle East.

He previously worked for Infocom, a company owned by three of his brothers in Richardson, a Dallas suburb. Infocom was the target of a three-day search by a federal terrorism task force in September. An order freezing assets cited a US$250,000 investment by the wife of a political leader of the militant Islamic group Hamas.

Commerce Department officials issued a temporary denial order on Sept. 6, 2001, to prevent Elashyi, his company and Infocom from shipping goods overseas without authorization from the United States. The government said it issued the order because Infocom had tried to ship to Syria and Libya.

In his plea, Elashyi admitted violating the temporary denial order by trying to ship computers to Saudi Arabia on Sept. 22 of last year.

Prosecutors said Elashyi negotiated the sale of 119 computers to Saudi Systems Inc. and accepted the company's wire transfer of US$107,385 for the computers. Authorities said Elashyi lied to Saudi Systems, telling the company he could not return its money because the United States had frozen his bank account.

Elashyi's felony indictment was the first criminal action stemming from a two-year investigation by the North Texas Joint Terrorism Task Force, officials said.

Prosecutors said Elashyi also admitted that he fraudulently acquired numerous credit cards in other people's names, without their knowledge. Elashyi would then obtain a supplemental card in his own name, ostensibly at the request of the primary cardholder.

The investigation revealed that Elashyi fraudulently acquired dozens of credit cards that he used to incur charges exceeding US$750,000.

Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, a company co-founded and directed by one of Elashyi's brothers, closed in December after the Treasury Department (news - web sites) accused the self-described charity of being a Hamas front and seized its assets.

Now the part they always leave out...

Campaign Finance Records from the Ron Kirk for Mayor campaign list Ihsan Elashyi as a major donor on April 24, 1995. Ron Kirk is the current Democrat Senate Nominee for the open US Senate race in Texas.

Elashyi's donation was one of several from persons affiliated with several radical islamic groups based out of Richardson, TX, including the Holy Land Foundation and CAIR. CAIR openly brags about their strong relationship with Kirk on their website http://www.cairdfw.org/accomplishments.shtml

Has or will the Dallas Morning News run this story, and the Kirk connection?

The Dallas Morning News has covered the whole Infocom/Holy Land Foundation thing pretty heavily.

They haven't mentioned that the central convict in it gave money to Kirk though. The only ones covering that aspect of it are some of the right wing press outlets.

Democrats helping the terrorists. Why don't they run ads saying if Republicans are elected there will be more mosque burnings.

Ihsan Elashyi = "Dallas Man"

I suppose he could be a native of Dallas.

...but hey, I'm a little bit skeptical here.

You may be onto something. They could do one with the daughter of some HAMAS agent who got blown up by the Israelis saying "When Republicans get elected, I feel like my father is dying all over again"

This was in an earlier thread - based on an article from an Austin paper.

Probably a conservative one. I seriously doubt the Austin UNamerican-Statesman would report the "moderate" Democrat media darling Ron Kirk has ties to terrorists.

Well, this brings the whole Barbra Streisand rant against Bush's war against terror into a whole new light -- she has endorsed RON KIRK on her website!

I hope the El Paso Times will pick this up on the wire and go with it. I know they won't link Kirk though. I think about 80% of El Paso is voting for him.

Some people say we need two parties to bounce ideals off each other. I say America has a deadly enemy as part of one Party and we tolerate them at our own peril and the peril of the nation. They and their vote fraud must be defeated.

I hope that in every county in every state, lawsuits spring up, and we have a repeat of 2001, only this time the Republicans should be crying foul and seeking redress. I don't know what is wrong with the Republican Party that it just keeps on taking this kind of sedition against the nation.

Four years seems a little light, but I'll take it. Anybody keeping track of how many InfoCom/Holy Land types have been indicted, convicted or deported?

We need to keep an eye on all the Middle Easterners if possible. We are blest that the vast majority of islamic immigrants in the Dallas & Fort Worth area are Paki or Indian, and are much less radical (and harder working and better educated) than the Arabs. The Pakis know their home country is a sh*thole, and they know why. The Arabs (in general, by comparison, etc) are too damn arrogant to recognize the pathological nature and current depravity of their native culture.

This thoroughly p*sses me off! The Cronyn campaign needs to be insisting this be covered in press releases. If the lame stream press STILL won't cover it, his campaign needs to start accusing the press of a cover-up. Enough is enough!

Elashyi's the first conviction. Another one has been deported - an ex-employee named Ghassan Dahduli who was shipped out because of ties to Al Qaeda.

It's definately a press coverup. I'm not sure what the Cornyn folk's strategy is on it either. They've hit Kirk on everything else related to national defense - Iraq, the Council for a Livable World thing - but not this.

Kirk's candidacy is a national story, so maybe we can get Fox or the Washington Times to carry it or something. Flood their news tips section with emails etc.

In fact the Austin UNAmerican-Statesman has been running sweet, gushy articles about Kirk for several weeks.
