SEATTLE (AP) -- Investigators are combing through the lives of two men named in connection with the Washington, D.C.-area sniper investigation, searching for clues to what may have motivated a killing spree.

John Allen Muhammad, 42, one of the men, is a Muslim convert said to be sympathetic to the Sept. 11 hijackers, according to published reports.

Muhammad, formerly a soldier at Fort Lewis, and John Lee Malvo, 17, a Jamaican citizen who attended school in Bellingham, may have been motivated by anti-American sentiments, The Seattle Times reported Thursday, quoting unidentified federal officials.

The officials said both were known to have expressed sympathy toward the hijackers, but neither was believed to be associated with the al-Qaida terrorist network.

Malvo is believed to be the stepson of Muhammad, who converted to Islam many years ago and changed his name last year from John Allen Williams, investigators told the Times.

Montgomery County, Md., Police Chief Charles Moose, who is leading the sniper investigation, said Wednesday that Muhammad was being sought for questioning and called him "armed and dangerous."

Two men were arrested early Thursday after they were found sleeping in their car at a Maryland rest stop, authorities said. Police did not release the names of the two, but a law enforcement source close to the investigation told The Associated Press: "I'm confident that these are indeed the people" sought in the killings.

On Wednesday, federal agents tore up the back yard at the house in Tacoma where Muhammad once lived. Investigators also combed through Malvo's Bellingham High School student records, reportedly seeking samples of his handwriting.

Muhammad, who was stationed at Fort Lewis in the 1980s and served in the Gulf War, had four children by two marriages that ended in divorce. Both involved bitter custody battles and at least one accusation that he abducted the children.

Muhammad was outgoing and "had a good sense of humor. He wasn't a quiet type. He liked to talk. He liked to mingle with people," said Carol Williams, his first wife and mother of his oldest son. Court records showed no felony record for him in Washington state.

She said Muhammad converted to Islam after divorcing her 17 years ago, about the time he joined the Army.

"After he changed his religion, he called and told me what not to feed my child," she said. "I told him as long as he (their son) lived with me, it was up to me."

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Muhammad and Malvo stayed at Lighthouse Mission, a Christian homeless shelter in Bellingham. Bellingham Mayor Robert Asmundson said the teen had minor run-ins with police but never was charged with a crime.

Carol Williams said that on one occasion, when their son was in middle school and visited Muhammad in Tacoma, she had to fight a legal battle to gain the boy's return.

Muhammad's second wife was Mildred Green, with whom he had three children. Williams said Green called her a couple of years ago after their divorce to tell her that Muhammad had abducted their children and to ask for help in getting them back.

Elaina Whitlock, 38, who lived near the family for six years in Tacoma, said that after the divorce, Muhammad was granted weekend visitations but at one point left with the three children.

"Things were going OK with visitations and no one suspected he would take off with them, but then he couldn't have her and he knew it would hurt her if he took the children," said Whitlock. "Her life was her children."

Green was reunited with the children about 1½ years ago, Whitlock said.

Leo Dudley, a former Marine who lived a block from Muhammad, said Muhammad helped provide security for Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan's "Million Man March" in Washington, D.C.

Muhammad was in excellent shape and knew karate, Dudley said.

"Any time he shook your hand, he would crush it," said Dudley. "He was just country. He was from down South, and the military brought him up here."

So, basically this guy was responding to all the anti american press coming from the left and the Democrats. It's all the fault of Peter Jennings and Ted Brokaw for spewing their hate on television every night.

We can play the bklame game, too. We need to regulate the se T.V. personalities, because too many muslims and black guys react to them.

IMO, John Muhammad is a little man with visions of grandeur. Islam is just his excuse to legitimize the violent acts he's been wanting to commit.

Lowndes County in Alabama near Montgomery was the founding place of the Black Panthers. According to posts by FReepers familiar with that area, there is still a large and active group of black Muslims in that area. John Muhammed served as a guard for the MMM, so he might have been affiliated with the Black Panthers or New Black Panthers.

So far there is no link that I've heard between Muhammed and Camp Zero, so why was he in Montgomery? My hunch is that he had fellow anti-American friends in the area.

Like all criminals he wants the victims disarmed.

Sammy ''The Bull'' Gravano has, by his own admission, sent 19 men to their graves. So it's safe to say that the former underboss of the Gambino crime family knows a thing or two (or 19) about guns and violence.

That's why his recent remarks about gun control, published in Vanity Fair, have resonance.

"Gun Control? It's the best thing you can do for crooks and gangsters. I want you to have nothing. If I'm a bad guy, I'm always gonna have a gun. Safety locks? You pull the trigger with a lock on, and I'll pull the trigger. We'll see who wins." -- VANITY FAIR 9/99 page 165 Sammy “the Bull” Gavano

So much for some commentary that John Mohammed's religion was only a small thing to him. Maybe he wasn't strictly religious in the sense of practicing Islamic rites and rituals but we now know he was DEFINITELY highly involved in Muslim extremist activities. Has anybody looked into the links between Calypso Louie and Al Qaeda?

This was the most important piece of info I've read since the capture of John Mohammed.

I agree....just a common criminal (as his stepson is) with extreme anger in his heart. Their crime spree is over, they will be tried as Americans, and I'm expecting they will be tied to several other robberies and murders (in addition to what is probably an existing rapsheet).

I've been watching ABC. They haven't said a thing about anti-americanism. Nor the million man march.

They interviewed a former karate studio business partner in Tacoma who said (get your barf bag ready) "I couldn't believe it was him. He was a muslim and... they don't teach that".

Has anybody looked into the links between Calypso Louie and Al Qaeda?

It's early yet... as this investigation unfolds, keep an eye out for the word : "Jamaat," as in Jamaat al Fuqra, Jamaat al Islam, or Jamaat al Tabligh. They are front groups for elements within Pakistan's ISI that are shoulder to shoulder with the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Other camps like this have been linked to Pakistan, so we'll see. Check this out...

Amongst the alleged members of the TJ (Tablighi Jamaat) in the Muslim community in the US is Mr.Louis Fara Khan, the Black Muslim leader. The TJ operates in the US and the Caribbean directly through its own preachers deputed from Pakistan and also recruited from the Pakistani immigrant community in the US as well as through front organisations such as the Jamaat-ul-Fuqra founded in the 1980s under the leadership of Sheikh Mubarik Ali Gilani, who generally lives in Pakistan, but travels frequently to the US and the Caribbean.

The annual report on the Patterns of Global Terrorism during 1998 issued by the Counter-Terrorism Division of the US State Department states as follows of the Jamaat-ul-Fuqra: "Seeks to purify Islam through violence. Members have purchased isolated rural compounds in North America to live communally, practise their faith and insulate themselves from Western culture. Fuqra members have attacked a variety of targets that they view as enemies of Islam, including Muslims they regard as heretics and Hindus. Attacks during the 1980s included assassinations and fire bombings across the US. Fuqra members in the US have been convicted of criminal violations, including murder and fraud."

So he converts to Islam, but mooches off the compassion of Christians.

Islam murders.

Christanity helps.
