The Chief Moose Fan Club.....

October 29, 2002: He's an unlikely hero. A somber law-enforcement officer who has a Ph. D. in criminology, has difficulty hiding his dislike for the press who dislike him even more intensely, and tears easily when speaking about the victims of crime. He's Montgomery County Police Chief, Charles Moose.

Signs thanking the police chief for his dedicated service during the Beltway Sniper incident have popped up all over Montgomery County. Congratulatory telegrams and flowers have poured into Montgomery County police headquarters from all over America. And now the ultimate tribute for this much maligned (by the media) police chief comes in the form of his own Web fan club, just like Buffy and SpiderMan and other stalwart American heroes. Introducing the Chief Moose Fan Club.

Granted this isn't the most professional Web site around. And it's an online tribute that seems a bit tacky, especially the blatant attempt to peddle 'Moose' mugs, T-shirts, and lunch boxes. However, it does appear to be a legitimate gathering place for the many online fans of Chief Moose.

Of course, the obvious question then arises: Why all this enthusiasm for Charles Moose? In reality, is he -- as such know-it-all arbiters of "blackness" in America as Harry Belafonte might charge -- just another "house slave" like Colin Powell, loved by whites for doing the bidding of the Man? Or was he simply at the right spot at the right time -- answering reporters questions on national TV after the two extremist white-supremacist snipers in their white van were caught?

The answer is obvious to anyone who watched Marlyand's opportunistic and oily Maryland prosecutor, Douglas Gansler, attempt to evade Tim Russert's pointed questions on Sunday's Meet The Press. Talk about insincere. Talk about a lean-and-hungry ambitious look. Talk about a budding Richard Nixon who couldn't care less about the welfare of the people of his state, about the victims of these terrible crimes and their grieving families, or about anything other than scoring some quick and cheap political points and advancing his already sleazy career.

Contrast that to the strained dignity of Chief Charles Moose throughout the crisis and his obvious anguish about what was transpiring under his watch. The man cared, and anyone watching him on TV could tell.............

Exactly. The guy's a buffoon. He had everyone looking for a Psycho White Guy Gun Nut in a White Van when there was plenty of evidence it was a couple of black guys in a Caprice.

I wonder if the perps would have been caught EARLIER,
if LE stopped looking for the "white van" and "angry white men"?

Did Moose know the perps, or know of the perps before this?

I keep wondering if they had a joint training session when they were in the National Guard during the same period.

When Moose was pinned in DC in 1999, it was by Robert Lamb, Jr. of Seattle, Washington and would likely have appeared in both the Oregon and Washington (State) papers as more than a hidden article.

When Muhammed realized who he had hooked, he played everything he knew about Moose.

I still have concerns that there is a connection with the Oregon cell.

Early on, I had trouble because it was so far away but with both Wash. State and Oregon (Mooses & National Guard) in the picture, it became even more possible.

The illegal alien scam could be "illegal terrorists" rather than everyday "illegal aliens".

WRONG! It was overwhelmingly WHITE, current and ex- FBI, military, "profilers" and talking heads who spouted forth the "angry white guy" and "white van" theories regarding these perps. Chief Moose had continued to insist that the public NOT engage in "tunnel vision" all along!!

Have you heard any leaders of the AA community accusing law enforcement or the Bush administration or the CIA of framing Mohammed and Malvo while the real perps get away? Have you heard any conspiracy theories, from any quarter, of the sort circulated by the islamos after the Bali attack? No?

Thank Chief Moose.

Think what we would be hearing if Moose's job was held by some swat-team type, or by Bull Connor.

Obviously Moose is not quite up to the ideal of a Tom Clancy novel, but he got the job fair and square. He came across as an honest well meaning person who had a very complex problem, with national security implications, jump on him out of left field.

Just takin' my blessings where I can find them.

At the risk of being labeled a Racist by some Left-Wing Socialist, I think it is very sad that the Police Chief of, what USED TO BE, one of the most affluent and top-schooled counties in the United States, traipses out a man like Moose, who can't even annunciate the English language.

He obviously can't pronounce words like "that" (dat), "children" (chillun), "going to" (gunna).

Oh, but how Politically Correct, huh?

And, let's not get carried away. It was a truck driver who called in the license plate on an old, weathered Chevy Caprice, with NJ tags...not a Jack-Booted Swat-Team swarming in to tie up traffic for 16 hours....looking for a white Isuzu Box truck with a damaged right-rear tailgate. < /sarcasm >

Except when roadblocks concentrated primarily on searching white vans and box trucks. That tunnel vision is evidently okay.

How little needs to be changed to make it fit right in at the DUmpster....

So he doesn't enuciate properly, Big F'n' Deal! Most folks born below the Mason-Dixon line, also all those north of Baltimore and west of the Mississipi River have certain diction problems which can be traced to cultural leanings. Chief Moose did his job and did it well, IMHO! It was necessary--for those of us situated in the sniper's area--to be reassured that there was at least a police presence. Silence, again IMHO, would have created even more panic...
