Top Democrats from North Carolina showed support for U.S. Senate candidate Erskine Bowles.

Former Governor Jim Hunt, Congressman David Price and Senator John Edwards joined Bowles at a rally for education in downtown Raleigh.

"It is not an accident that the polls are moving in the direction they're moving. It is not an accident that the wind is at Erskine Bowles' back,” Edwards said.

"North Carolina is going to need 90,000 new teachers in the next decade,” Price said. “You could fill up Carter Finley stadium. You could fill up the Entertainment and Sports Arena and you'd still be 10,000 short."

Education is a major issue for the Senate candidates to tackle and Bowles is a long-time opponent of taxpayer-funded school vouchers. It's an issue many in the crowd believed would destroy public education.

"Not having vouchers, no privatization of our public school system,” Edwards said. “This is a guy who understands we need to invest in our schools."

"We've got to have smaller class sizes, we've got to have good teachers, we've got to do the things that help our teachers succeed," Hunt told the audience.

Bowles said, "I'm very worried that Ms. Dole is in support of a voucher program that would take badly needed resources out of our public schools. I oppose that strongly."

That's encouraging to Karen Garr. The retired teacher and past president of the North Carolina Association of Educators said school vouchers aren't the way to go. "If you believe in democracy and educating citizens for a democracy you have to support the public schools,” she said. “Vouchers are an empty promise."

Not to be outdone, First Lady Laura Bush will be in Raleigh to throw her support behind Republican U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Dole.

News 14 Carolina will have live coverage of her appearance Friday night at 6:30.

Which is why we need vouchers!

Have you heard the LAME radio spots Bowels is running the past week? The stupid one with Jim Hunt and Bob Etheridge talking in a monotone and then my favorite part when they chime in on a duet of "VOTE FOR ERSKINE BOWLES".

The one with the dumber than mud sounding race car driver is just as bad. I don't care if it was a republican airing these ads I'd still have to turn them off, they make me nuts.

I can't wait till this election is over.

In the last two days we non-North Carolinians have been told that EDole may have lost her senatorial leadm-- a lead that polls have given her for at least two months. What has caused her to lose this lead? Has she been slacking off in the campaign like Bob did in 1996? Bob took off two weekends in September, as I recall. Is she speaking in mindless platitudes that fail to inspire the base GOP vote to come to the polls? Is the loss of manufacturing jobs in NC, something Jesse Helms fought all his career, playing now into the hands of the Democrats? Wasn't Liddy Dole just overrated from the start? It now appears that the NC "democracy" had its on "November surprise" in store for the GOP. Also, I understand Bob is not making campaign appearance for her? What gives?

This is basically a Rat state with a large Clinton-hating contingent. Many of the Democrats are simply "coming home" as a dead parakeet could win 45% on their ticket. Much of what you said is true.

Politicians like Jim Hunt are the reason NC has never produced a president (if we exclude the NC-born Andrew Johnson). Can this Senator John Edwards reverse the bias against NC candidates running for president? He surely enjoys the support of the interest groups and the soccer moms. If Bowles wins, I expect Edwards to claim victory for himself.

I know Karen Garr. Nice socialist. Nice Union leader. Was a Union Leader 30 years ago when I was a public school teacher - and is still at it. Had a job where she didn't teach but worked in the schools in the NCAE office in the school. Do North Carolinians know that Union offices are inside their schools? (or, at least, WERE). Back then, they didn't call it a Union. But it was. And Karen Garr IS A UNION LEADER. She comes across as very soft spoken and a "nice" person. Always has. And, is, I am sure a "nice" person. But she stands for the same thing every Democrat stands for: LIE about improving our schools when really what she cares about and has always cared about is higher pay for teachers. Period.

Unfortunately, higher pay for teachers DOES NOT TRANSLATE INTO BETTER SCHOOLS AND BETTER TEACHING FOR STUDENTS. But it does translate into good false advertising for Demonrats who only want every teacher to vote for them despite the fact that front line teachers are simply cared about by the NCAE or any other UNION except as a means to get their dues out of them!!! And to USE then for every Democratic Party advertisement!!!

While bubba Bowles is screaming that Dole wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, Dole is finally putting out the scary ads that show pictures of Bowles with King Bubba Clinton. Bravo!

We don't need to send one more Clinton enabler to Washington.
