Two Charged in New Gloucester Road Rage (Snowplow vs pickup truck)
The Portland (Maine) Press Herald ^ | 11/20/02 | David Hench

NEW GLOUCESTER — A motorist who almost collided with a pickup backing onto Route 231 Monday night pulled a gun on the truck driver during the confrontation that followed, authorities said. Subsequently, the owner of the pickup, who had been plowing a driveway, responded by driving after the other car, dropping his plow and slamming into the car until it rolled over and went off the road, said Capt. Kevin Joyce, of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Deane Storey, 49, of Yarmouth, was driving south in a Ford Contour when he had to swerve suddenly to avoid hitting a Chevrolet pickup, which Thomas Michael Brady, 48, of Pownal, was backing out of a driveway he had been plowing, Joyce said.

The two yelled challenges at each other and when Brady approached the car, Storey pulled a .380 Walther PPK handgun and pointed it at Brady.

As Storey drove off, Brady climbed back into his pickup and chased after him, at one point lowering his plow and ramming the rear of the Contour three times, Joyce said.

The car was pushed off the road and rolled over, though Storey was not injured. Brady also was not hurt, nor was his 8-year-old son who was in the cab with him, Joyce said.

Deputies charged Storey with criminal threatening with a firearm and charged Brady with reckless conduct with a motor vehicle.

Joyce said that following winter storms, motorists should keep alert for the amber flashing lights plows typically display and plows need to make sure there is no approaching traffic before backing out of a driveway. Both precautions will become more important as snowbanks are piled higher, diminishing visibility.

Anyone, literally anyone, can just waltz into a car show and pay cash for a used snow plow attachment, no questions asked.

I can't speak for everyone, but if I was intentionally rammed off the road by a snowploy, with my 8 year old son in the car with me, and my car rolled 1x, I would empty my pistol's clip into the #$%#$&*.

Well, based on my own reading skills, I determined that the 8-year old was in the snowplow's cab, not in the car that rolled...

What idiot with an 8-year-old along chases after an armed motorist? Maybe he had a bigger gun? Snowplow gave him testosterone overload? Did he tell his son, "Ayuh, watch this"? He may very well have approached the car making death threats. Besides, the motorist drove off, only to be chased and rammed by the truck. Obviously, this truck driver was extemely aggressive. Imagine what he would have tried if the motorist was un armed. Now Mr. Storey has a Ford Contour, literally.

Hmmm, I wonder how Brady's plow business will hold up. Bet he shoves all the landscaping/retaining walls/whiskey barrels back about 20' while plowing. Those folks had better not let the cats play outside when Mr. Plow comes a-calling.

Maybe we need a 5-day waiting period on snowplow purchases, so that angry people have time to calm down first?

The Ford driver should be grateful the snowplow wasn't mounted on this.

In some jurisdictions(San Francisco, for instance)the Ford driver would be lucky that the snow plow driver did not try to mount him.
