Gov. Mark R. Warner will push for a constitutional amendment repealing the law that prohibits Virginia's governors from seeking re-election, according to a report published Sunday.

Warner has asked Democratic legislators to drop their opposition to the idea and will make a major push next month toward getting the amendment on the ballot, The Washington Post reported aides and party leaders as saying.

I agree. Its better change the Virginia Constitution so governors can serve two consecutive terms just like elsewhere in the country. If the voters don't want to reelect the Governor they don't have to. The term limits should remain in place for voters to adopt the change.

Term limits are stupid. The Founders didn't want us to have term limits-- otherwise they would have added them to the respective articles of the Constitution.

Agreed. Term limits for elected federaal officeholders are unconstitutional. I support this legislation as long as Gov. Mark Warner doesn't benefit from it.

I agree. Term limits are a copout, IMHO.

There are more like Warner in the future. The law now gets rid of him for four years and that's a good thing. Warner is a perfect example of why we shouldn't change the law.

Hey, blame the voters. Were it not for this dumb law, Gilmore would probably still be governor.

gold....

"They dont have to"... That is the crux of why the entire country should have term limits. Perhaps not just one term, but term limits nevertheless. This idea that the people will turn a bad person out of office does not happen in the real world.

Also, Warner, as most all other politicians are against term limits once they are in office and get a smell of the power they hold. Professional politicians were never in the minds of the Founding Fathers. Once in office, these people get a deathgrip hold on the job and will never leave.

In this past election, 94 per cent of incumbents were returned to office. That indicates that their opposition were of a lesser value, which is doubtful.

We have Thurmond, 100 years old still in office. That is a disgrace. Been in public office for over 60 years. Kennedy for 40 years. Disgrace.

Were it not for dumb GOP infighting between 2 weak candidates for a year while Warner was campaigning, we wouldn't have the 'RAT in the Guv mansion now. The majority of voters are always dumb, it's up to party to field a candidate that can get the votes of the simple minded. When the candidates act as stupid as the average voter, we are bound to lose.

Well actually, Gilmore might be in his first term as George Allen would've served a second term. But I doubt that Gilmore could've been re-elected.

This comes up at about this point in every Governor's term. The law will eventually be changed, as it should.

I admired Mark Earley greatly and wish that the Virginia GOP wasn't so excited about having the ultra-liberal Mark Warner become Governor. The guy, as I understand it, has been a joke.

I wonder if he still thinks that he is Senate material against Allen. I'd love to see Allen slap Warner down.

Any thoughts about 2005 in Virginia? Do you think it is Kilgore's to lose? In New Jersey, anything can happen at this point. McGreevey isn't the most popular man in Trenton.
