TRENT CLINTON-Andrew Sullivan Advises Lott 'To Do the Decent thing, And Get the H*ll Out'
The Daily Dish ^ | December 11, 2002 | London Times Writer Andrew Sullivan

Posted on 12/12/2002 1:55:49 AM PST by ewing

The trouble with Trent Lott is that he combines the worst of some Democrats-big government pork barrel spending-with the worst part of some Republicans-racial obtuseness, in Lott's case right on to the brink of outright biogotry.

The connective tissue is Clintonian spin.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to be Senator from Mississippi-that is up to the voters.

What I am saying is that Trent Lott cannot be Republican Senate Majority Leader any more without destroying a good deal of what George W. Bush has accomplished.

Nice try Mr. Lott, but your time is up.

Do the only decent thing and get the hell out of here.

I've been calling for Lott to go ever since Gingrich went.

Time is UP Trent - lets get a REAL leader in there, preferably one who will fight the Dems like a Pit Bull...

How about someone who is all for securing our borders?

How many of these articles are we going to post here?

The Dems smell blood in the water and have their sharks circling because they badly want to score one against the President, but there is no need for us to join in the feeding frenzy with them.

When you have a man wounded on the field (whether accidentally self-inflicted, or friendly fire, or enemy action) you don't abandon him.

And if anyone thinks we aren't in a fight to the death with a very tough, dangerous, and yes, evil, enemy, they maybe better do some serious, grown-up thinking.

I'm inclined to support Lott resigning his leadership due to his incompetance, but considering the source on this one is Andrew Sullivan, it should not be taken to seriously.

Sullivan was even suggesting yesterday that Lott's comment was the cause of Suzie Terrell's defeat in Louisiana. His sentiments were shared on that by Paul Krugman, but to any sane political observer that notion is absurd. Lott needs to go for being an incompetant leader, but Sullivan needs to crawl back into whatever hole he came out of as well.

Where was Trent when the 'wounded' House Impeachment Managers were gasping for air in 1998?

All Cheerleader boy had to say then was 'Don't bring your garbage into my Senate..'

Well, Mr. Lott you can now take out your own darn garbage.

The Louisiana election was too late for the comments to register there.

Yeah! Let's give the rats a victory, a scalp on the wall! Let's prove that character assassination still wins in that town. Let's prove that the liberal media can still shnuker the stupid party, even when both Hannity and Rush expose the hypocracy fervently. Let's show just how underhanded the Free Republic can be, getting even with Lott through helping out slanderous rats.

Let's help political correctness reach all time highs.

Let's let Senator Byrd have a pass on this one and make the the black voters think that we are more prejudiced than the rats by eating our own while keeping the 'new tone' with the rats. Great idea. /sarcasm.

My sentiments exactly. Thank you for your well-reasoned post.

We want Lott gone not because of what the Dems think but because we don't want our party to be defined by even the hint of a discredited and grotesque policy. Lott can wax nostalgic about 1948 all he wants but Majority Leader isn't the place to express such sentiments. We want Lott gone above all for the simple reason he's never delivered on the conservative agenda as Majority Leader in the past. Its time for a change.

Absolute agreement here. How much of a dead-head can a person be to say such a thing and knowing it'll be televised? Either he's in his own insulated world and was too arrogant or unaware to think it wouldn't cause a flap (22 years ago it didn't so I guess he thought it wouldn't again), or else he has a serious brain-to-mouth disconnect. Some reps may see this as running scared, but I don't--Lott was never a particularly effective leader and the gop's feelings for him don't run all that deep, so let's use this opportunity to boot him out of that post and put a real ballbreaker in his place. It's unacceptable to have him stay and be such a prominent face--for the good of the republican party, it has to be done.

Where was Trent?

That isn't the question. The question is where are YOU?

I don't like New Yorkers, but no damned al-Qaeda terrorists are going to kill my fellow Americans. Ditto, Lott. I'm not going to let the Dems take him down.

So are you with the Democrats or the terrorists or where are you?

I'm not with the Dems. I don't him to go because of what the Dems want. I want to see Lott gone cause he hasn't been up to the job. The more time he keeps explaining away what he shouldn't have said in the first place, the less time we have to get our conservative agenda passed. The last thing I want is to give the Dems or even Al Qaeda ammo. I'm going to defend a proven GOP leader to the hilt -but Lott hasn't demonstrated he's willing to go to bat for us. There are a lot of fine and capable people in the U.S Senate to lead our party. Its time for a change.

The more time he keeps explaining away what he shouldn't have said in the first place, the less time we have to get our conservative agenda passed.

It's late, and you're not thinking straight. If the Republicans and conservatives stop piling on, this issue will be gone in a week.

In case you didn't notice Congress is not in session right now.

We have until the next two RINO's bolt to pass the conservative agenda. And letting the Democrats (socialists) know they have allies among Republicans and conservatives only makes them tougher to beat.

Remember when Sonny indicated he disagreed with his father about doing drug distribution in The Godfather? It gave the other family the idea to try to take out the Godfather so Sonny could take over and do a deal with them. When you are fighting a tough and dangerous enemy, you don't show division in the ranks while you're under fire.

What you don't seem to get is that it is not Lott's scalp the Dems want, it is President Bush's scalp. You take down Lott and you weaken Bush's ability to cause fear in Dems who are willing to vote for cloture on very important conservative agenda items, like judges.

You may not be used to reindeer games, power games, grownup games,....politics. You can't throw the enemy meat.

Did the author call for Clinton or Condit to resign? Or call on Jesse Jackson to leave the Rainbow/PUSH Communism?

...there is no need for us to join in the feeding frenzy with them.

The important reactions have been from the right. The Dems have no power here other than politics. The right, specifically the Senate Majority and Bush, can tell him to step down. If you go back to the original Washington Post article: What was Bill Kristol's first reaction. "Oh, God," when he learned of Lott's comments. "It's ludicrous. He should remember it's the party of Lincoln," The important reaction by Kristol which epitomises what many (most?) Republican's think is "Oh, God"
