December 18, 2002 -- NEXT to the Mohammed Ali-Joe Frazier fight, Madison Square Garden had never been so packed.

Seventeen thousand people jammed the great monument of combat on Oct. 24, 1968, to listen and embrace the words of segregationist Gov. George Wallace of Alabama.

For the love of Mike, Thurmond ran for the presidency 54 years ago!

And Trent lott was 7 years old when Thurmond ran for the Presidency.

When Lott first got to know Stom, lott was about 40 and Strom was near 80. Strom had been in the senate for over 30 years. He took lott under his wing and trained him like a son to take over leadership some day.

In many respects Strom was like a second father to Lott. There has been for many years a father son like relationship between Strom and Trent.

Strom is 39 years older than Trent and Trent has always looked up to Strom. Strom was active in government when Roosevelt, Truman, Stalin, and Churchill were the big players. It is heady stuff to be mentored by such a man.

If you understand how Lott felt about Stom you can undersand why he said what he said.

I understand where you got your screen name now.

Maybe he knows more than you about the people he is discussing. It doesn't take much to be nice and listen every once in awhile.

I had to stop at "mad dog". that's ridiculous and over-the-top. turns out McCarthy was right. I guess a lot of people, especially those on the left, hadn't received that memo yet.

There is nothing more racist today than the institutionalized, paid for in part by your and my tax dollars, Congressional Black Caucus. Whites are excluded from the CBC and the CBC is almost entirely made up of Democrats.

I don't approve of what Lott has said, but he has apologized over and over. I am not ready to side with the Democrats and the NY Times over this. It seems that a lot of people that piled on Lott for having no spine, don't show much spine themselves when one of their own is attacked.

While I agree with you in principle on the firestorm of the NYT, the Republicans must factor in the impact of a continuuing leadership under Lott. Whether it is fair or not or justified or not, a cloud of racism will hover over the Republicans and in the matter of judicial appointments this could be decisive. There are times when we have to play cards dealt us, even if the deck is stacked as in this case.

This is a stupid argument.

First of all, we all know what the Democrats are. This debate is about leadership of our side, not theirs.

Secondly, Trent Lott is majority leader now. What Byrd, or Kennedy's father, did in the past is not about now.

Stupid Lott's office is about now.
