One Republican official said that Lott's office had informed White House officials beforhand of his decision.
Despite rampant speculation that Lott would demand a committee chairmanship or some other consolation prize, this official said Lott was stepping down with no strings attached.
Lott, 61 has been Senate GOP Leader sinc 1996 when Robert Dole, (Republican-Kansas) left the U.S. Senate to devote full time to his presidential bid.

Why don't they appoint him to head the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, like Clarence Thomas did over a decade ago?
To: ewing
Ah well... I guess we couldn't afford to lose a Senate seat.

Interesting. I wonder what Chafee's next statement will be?

And I have a bridge for sale that just needs a little paint.

Seems like he is stuck in the GOP now. He cannot call Frist an extremist.

That's what I was thinking. I have to think that the WH-Frist undercurrent involved an olive branch to Chafee, but who knows?

Why don't they appoint him to head the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, like Clarence Thomas did over a decade ago?Better yet, why don't we just abolish the Commission altogether? Like we really need a government agency to make sure that Hooters hires enough men in red skirts, as they tried to do during the Clinton era.

Well, Chaffee called for someone new, and Frist emerged. So, he really cannot complain. Ditto for Collins and Snowe.
Arlen is being Arlen, supporting Trent to the hilt. My quixotic Senator...
Always the lost cause.

You mean through blackmail (no pun intended)?
To: VRWC_minion
Could be, I think Chester will get something out of this.

You're kidding, right? Did they really go after Hooters for men's sake? Somehow I won't be surprised if you say yes. :-(

He's your guy? Sorry to hear it. Seems like most states that aren't completely communist have at least one good RINO.
To: ApesForEvolution
Careful with Arlen.
He is more Don Quijote than he is a RINO.
It seems he loves a fight in which he can be the absurd guy.
To: republicanwizard
A RINO nonetheless...
To: ApesForEvolution
Who is to say that you are not a RINO if I am more conservative than you are?
To: republicanwizard
Yep, Frist is a step toward Chafee from Lott.
To: GraniteStateConservative
Congratulations on your two fine Senators!
So, will Aunt McConnell be the Majority Whip?
My dream would be that Santorum is the GOP whip.
What a contrast! Frist-Santorum Daschle-Reid
