The politics were/are terrible, but I still loved the Clash.

Joe in the punk did massive amounts of speed. And smoked loads of cigs.
Anyways, RIP.

With your hands on your head,
Or on the trigger of your gun?

This is truly sad. My brother and I were big Clash fans. About ten years ago we met Joe Strummer at a Robby Krieger gig at the Vine St. Bar and Grill, in H'wood. He was very pleasant, and really appreciated us introducing ourselves and telling him how much we'd enjoyed his music (as well as the drink we bought him, heh).
I first saw the Clash on their second tour with the Cramps and the Dead Kennedys at the old Kezar Pavillion in San Francisco. The floor was shaking so much that the amps started to wobble over the crowd. They had to stop the show and strap down the stacks. Later I saw them at the Orpheum with Lee Dorsey. The Clash was great about paying respects to an older generation of rockers and giving them a chance to be seen by younger fans. I also saw them with The Who at the Oakland Coliseum in 1982.
Politics aside, The Clash was one of the greatest live bands ever.
Rest in peace, Joe Strummer.

Ditto - Loved "Sandinista", and still listen to it.
"Charlie don't surf but I think he should...Charlie's gonna be, a napalm star..."
Why the heck are most of the talented musicians and song-writers so darned left-wing brain-dead? I mean a genius duo like Patti Smith/Lenny Kaye are so damed moronic in their world-wiew...
But at least we have Ted Nugent as an oasis of (relative) sanity!

The last time I heard the Clash on the radio I got pulled over by the police for speeding down Independence Avenue in Washington DC. RIP Joe.

legendary British punk band The ClashLegendary?
Wonder where this rates on an Arthurian scale of "legendary?"

I also saw them with The Who at the Oakland Coliseum in 1982.I saw the same show at Shea Stadium.
We were being frisked down waiting to get in when the opening bars of "Should I stay or should I go?" came blarring out.
His music really translates when it's played LOUD

Not sure why it has to be that way. So many bands I like disappoint me with their inane politcal statements. I used to be a big-time REM fan, but finally couldn't stand their in-your-face lefitist views which Stipe was so very eager to make known. I held on to my old ones, but wouldn't buy a new one for anything. Same with U2.

Great story and what a shame for Joe just when the Brits and us are gearing up to "ROCK THE CASBAH!"

Talk about your "brush with greatness"...
Too bad another one leaves the stage too early...
