Father of slain baby arrested in Lubbock

12/27/2002

Associated Press

LUBBOCK, Texas - The father of an 8-month-old girl who was shot in the chest and killed as her mother tried to protect her on Christmas morning was arrested in this South Plains city overnight.

Eladio Camacho Navarro, who had threatened the woman in Houston with a revolver, was held in Lubbock city jail on a capital murder charge in the death of Nayeli Navarro. She was shot as her mother turned to protect the baby and herself from her common-law husband.

The elder Navarro was discovered asleep in a residence at about 12:30 a.m. Friday, said Lubbock Police Sgt. Jeff Davis.

"We had received word of a possible location in Lubbock, and HPD (Houston police) and the Texas Rangers got with our SWAT team and briefed them on the Houston incident," Davis said. "At about 12:30, they forced entry into a residence and found the suspect asleep. He was taken into custody without further incident."

Police were unsure of Navarro's relationship to anyone in Lubbock.

Law officers had initially thought Navarro might have been headed for Mexico after he eluded arrest in Houston.

Alma Mosqueda, 32, said her common-law husband of two years, was drunk when he stormed into their home and started punching her in the head and pulling her hair. She said Navarro pulled a revolver from under the mattress, loaded it and left the house without telling her where he was going. He returned about 6 a.m.

"He accused me of cheating on him," Mosqueda told the Houston Chronicle in Friday's editions. "I said, `I'm going to take our daughter and leave,' and he said, `I'll kill you first.' "

Mosqueda could see Navarro's loaded .38-caliber revolver tucked into his pants, but she didn't think he would use it. But Mosqueda, clutching her daughter to her chest, watched in horror as Navarro charged toward her and reached for the gun.

She instinctively twisted to her right to shield the little girl.

"I said, `I don't care if you shoot me, but you're not going to kill the baby,' " said Mosqueda. "I guess he wanted to hit my heart, because he fired a bullet where my heart would have been and hit the baby.

"I said, `You killed the baby!' and he screamed, `Oh my God! What did I do?' He grabbed the baby and threw the gun on the floor. I called 911, and he said, `Don't call the cops,' and left the house in my car.

"He loved the baby," Mosqueda said. "The baby was everything to him. She was a beautiful, chubby baby who was always happy and always smiling."

I'm trying to think of a punishment that fits the crime, but I don't usually think in those terms. As mhking says, "just damn."

My grandpa told me when I was about three years old to never aim a gun at anything one did not want to kill.

"He loved the baby," Mosqueda said. "The baby was everything to him."

Yeah, right. Still in denial I see. I'll bet she has a new guy just like him by this time next year.

Never fear
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice will take care of Mr Navarro in an appropriate manner.
Cant think of anything worse than being in Huntsville as a convicted babykiller.....

I think a little girl named Alma was killed a few days ago while protecting her mother from an abusive boyfriend.

yep, I was right...

CHICAGO (AP) - A 6-year-old girl was beaten to death when she tried to break up a fight between her mother and her mother's boyfriend, police said. Alma Manjarrez suffered bruises over much of her body in the beating early Wednesday, police said. The girl's 26-year-old mother did not immediately seek help, waiting until 3:30 a.m. to dial 911, police spokesman Thomas Donegan said.

Sounds like it -- a new common-law "husband" who will love her just like the old one.

I was just talking to someone today (Mr. Baby-Killer Meet Mr. Lethal Injector)who is in 'mitigation' in Texas Law --- a new program to find mitigating circumstances for people charged with homicide in its various legal forms, to present to a jury. she told me that it costs 5 million to send somebody to the death chamber and only $500,000 to send them to life without parole (meaning you get a chance at parole in 40 years). Sounds 'dead' wrong to me.

Interesting choice!
Meet "Mr Needle" in approx 9 years or spend the next 40 years in Eastham or Darrington chopping cotton sans "Cool Hand Luke"
Boy! you gonna catch a chain......
