After bank burglary, wrapper trail led to trailer park

MARKED TREE, Ark. - A man's love for Dum-Dum suckers, police say, led them from a crime scene to the suspect's front door, giving true meaning to the phrase, "Follow the trail of evidence."

Michael Brown, 33, of Marked Tree pleaded not guilty Friday in Poinsett County, Ark., Circuit Court to burglary charges involving break-ins at the Marked Tree Bank and Crafts Jewelry.

A trail of Dum-Dum wrappers led police to Mr. Brown.

Police say he broke into the downtown bank after hours Nov. 16. The bank's security cameras showed the intruder stealing a clock radio, a compact disc player and a handful of Dum-Dums, the hard candy on a stick that the bank gives to children.

The next morning, police followed a trail of the wrappers down the street, across railroad tracks and to the mobile home park where Mr. Brown lives.

"The trail didn't lead right up to his door like the bread crumbs in Hansel and Gretel," Marked Tree Detective Mark Robinson said. "But they led to where we knew he was living."

When confronted, Mr. Brown confessed to the crime, police said.

"I keep a bowl of candy on my desk," Detective Robinson said. Mr. Brown "kept asking for them during the interview. I asked him if he didn't eat all the candy from the bank."

Detective Robinson said Mr. Brown told him he has a love for hard candies.

Mr. Brown has also been charged in a Nov. 10 jewelry store burglary, which was no more profitable than the bank job. The burglar took the merchandise from the display cases, but it was all plastic jewelry, police said.

Detective Robinson said Mr. Brown also is a suspect in a third crime - the theft of a bulldog from a home. He has not been charged.

In that case, police said a thief left a distinctive metallic-covered cellular telephone at the scene. Police recognized the phone. It was reported stolen by Mr. Brown's ex-girlfriend.

Mr. Brown is being held in the Poinsett County jail.

Yet another example of the Devil's Ratchet...

Mr. Brown will, as a result of this stupidity-spree, likely lose his right to vote.

But -probably being a democrat- this fine point is likely to be lost on him and he will -I imagine- continue to exercise his franchise.

If Mr. Brown were a Republican, on the other hand, he would probably emerge from this tawdry incident so filled with self-loathing and a need to 'atone' for his misdeed that he would never vote again, even if his right to do so was restored...
