The Middle East: The Lost Front

by Political_Man

The Cold War was unlike any seen in human history. For the first, and perhaps the last time, two countries did battle not with weapons or with men but with economic systems. More than that, every aspect of both societies was at work against the other. The Cold War was a battle of propaganda, technology, and even culture, with each side pitching to the world that theirs was better. Of course the military was involved as an expression of power and might, but the build up of armaments on both sides was more of an economic factor than anything else. When battles were fought they were proxy wars. Rarely did either side fire a shot directly at the other.

Under these rules the United States and the Soviet Union did battle, with each side having a unique advantage. The United States, with it's popular culture and openness, appealed more to regular citizen, especially in countries with no state owned media to taint information. The Soviet Union attracted governments, where American ideals of democracy and freedom would have meant a certain end to the local power structure. For example, certainly Castro no doubt understood that an alliance with the United States and his dictatorship were mutually exclusive. Populations were suppressed in these dictatorships with a heavy dose of Anti-Americanism.

The Middle East was of critical importance to both sides. With large deposits of oil, the Middle Eastern states could fuel the economic and industrial juggernaut of the United States. The Soviet Union with such close proximity to the Middle East couldn't afford to have Western Influence so close to its borders.

And the War was on. Billions and billions of dollars of equipment, manpower, and resources poured in to the Middle East from both sides. A group of societies as old as time itself suddenly was the focus of a war they didn't ask for, a war they couldn't handle. And clearly where American influence triumphed in other areas of the world, it failed in the face of a culture not ready for modernization. Where Anti-American propaganda had bowed to the realities of the day in other parts of the world, it was embraced by a religion that didn't understand American culture. And Anti-Americanism was reinforced by backwards, oppressive governments that knew American Freedom meant the demise of their own power.

After the fall of the Soviet Union we basked in the glory of our victory, satisfied in the notion that peace had been brought to the world and that American concepts of freedom and independence had won the day, in idea and in practice. We focused our time on problems from within and ignored our responsibilities abroad living our lives carelessly. As Democratic adviser James Carville was fond of saying during the 1992 Presidential Election for Bill Clinton; “It's the economy stupid.” And we squandered our time as trouble brewed.

Long after President Ronald Reagan's prediction of the Soviet Union has been fulfilled and communism has been “dismissed as a sad, bizarre chapter in human history” we fight the “War on Terror”, remnants of a war long since won, obligations of the 90's long since ignored.

Regardless of the difficulty and the sins of the past, America must go back and win the lost front of the Cold War. Our civilization depends on it.

Oh, how inciteful!

Did Political Man come up with this stroke of genius all on his own? What a shrewd bugger he is, thanks for explaining this really tough concept of the present world situation to us - not.

Politicalman:

"Regardless of the difficulty and the sins of the past, America must go back and win the lost front of the Cold War."

How do you win a war of perception with a people who do not want to hear the truth? Any group of people that still believe 911 was a great Jewish conspiracy are a pack of hopeless fools. The world of the Middle East is so distorted that winning their minds and hearts is impossible; and even if it were feasible they should take the first steps toward reapproachment with the West. We should not waste our time or resources on such useless endeavors.

I have to come clean; I thought it would be obvious that I was trying to reach people who might not normally read the news with the character of "Political Man". While my simple editoral might seem like common sense to regular visitors to FR, I assure you that most people who “aren't into politics” or younger people who didn't live through the 80's aren't aware of how we got to this point in the current world and the War on Terror. I think the idea for reaching out to non-political types and those who live in a clouded fog from day to day or bother to keep themselves informed is a worthy effort, especally when it comes to the War and keeping people focused on the task at hand. I had used the idea of Political Man as joke on non-political sites and had gotten positive feedback. I assumed that some on FR might actually be supportive of such an effort but judging from the response from this thread, I was sadly mistaken.

I ask in an honest fashion where did I go wrong with my idea and how can I improve it?

Not bad Honcho..not bad at all.

I mean..Pre-eminent think tank specialist on the Mid East..Daniel Pipes comes up with summation quotes like..."Islam...angry and frustrated...sulking on the periphery of the Econimic world".

Spot on with the psychy evaluation.
Both sides grinding 24 putting out their propaganda..with 3rd party screaming above the Din to be heard.
Chuckle...Is Islam not ..screaming to be heard?

How will things go now that the U.S. and corporate interests move into the void of the mid-east...Russia having been paid off to some degree to stay out...or found themselves locked out of the house while they were away spending money..sumthin like that.
Yes..For America its a knife edge walk...to much power and presence..and the world will jump up and scream "Imperialist...Colonial exploiter"...
If America makes the mistake of letting to many loose ends remain..the world will blame them for destabalizing a region they had no business being..ie..if your going to fix it ..fix it right!
Like the Lawrence of Arabia Movie...the one Arab shooting the other for having a drink at his well..this is the "Clay" with which the U.S. gets to work with..chuckle!
China ..banging pots and pans over...well rest assured its some logical thing..which Beijing fails to forward..but there it is..
And Russia..like the article....smiling with a hand outstretched...with a fist behind their back clenching at the prospect of having the American and his luggage coming to stay for a while.
and the Arab....still running around screaming.
Here's to 2003...doubtfull it will be a quiet year.
