I've won nearly 100 bids on ebay and have yet to have a problem. I had one seller send me something that was not as it was discribed (they failed to see the writing and highlighting) I returned it and was refunded. Ebay works for me.

I just got scammed for $3100 on EBay. PayPal was absolutely no help and EBay will only reimburse up to $250. The seller had lots of good feedback, but got into financial trouble and scammed several folks.

I had bought many items there before. It was a painful lesson. I will never again use PayPal and only deal with people who will accept credit cards so I have some protection.

I also had good experiences with e-bay ( small items ).
I don't think I'd try to purchase anything large though.
Any time you buy something online there's a risk.
The penalty for fraud should be hanging.
