Bump from another oldtimer (not nearly as old as you!).
I've been contributing monthly for a year or so, just a few dollars. It's painless and I don't even notice it on my credit card.

Thank you for your memories of FR at the start. I can remember those years, but I hadn't found FR yet and thought I was all alone in my anger at the corrupt Clinton administration. The liberal media would never let on that most of us in the US were ashamed of his behavior and greatly alarmed by his willingness to sell out on national security.
Now that I have found FR, I know that there are many of us who believe in this repubic and are willing to fight for our freedoms.
A contribution to FR helps counter the spin dished out daily by the liberal media. Please give what you can... we are making a difference.

Another newbie BTT. I found FreeRepublic quite by accident - I musta misspelled "porn" in the search engine, and, well, there you are...

A very nice post, and one that Jim Robinson would surely appreciate!!

As another "old-timer", I echo everything you say. Free Republic is a treasure and I can't imagine the Internet without it. In fact, sometimes I forget that there is an "Internet" out there, being that I spend so much of my time here! I get the impression sometimes that all these other websites exist for us to link to and steal cool pictures from.
I have been a monthly contributer practically since the monthly program started. Never had a problem with it. It happens automatically and I don't even think about it. I think the $3 a month pitch is an excellent idea. Who's going to miss $3 a month? Yet if everybody signed up for that small amount, there would be no need for quarterly fundraisers here at all.
Anyway, I hope some of you will consider the monthly donation program with your debit card. It's painless and easy.

I have only been a member just over a year, but in that year I have found FR to be one of the most useful websites in existence. Now I take money that used to go to PBS and give it to something I truly agree with most of the time.

Come on, fess up. Quit being nice.
Tell us all your real purpose in posting this vanity. You've just been banned for the sixth time, you hate Jim Robinson and you want to start a flame war. Go on, admit it.

A volley bump back atcha. About time for the evening crowd to start churning, and we have, what, 8% to go?
We do live in interesting times. You made the point that one ticked-off computer geek in a wheelchair started this phenomenon - consider that Franklin and Madison would certainly look at that silly piece of paper they wrote in Philadelphia and its geopolitical consequences not much more than two centuries later and think, too, in terms of pebbles and avalanches.
Folks, the imitators don't even come close (even with celebrity names and corporate dough) and there isn't any real competition. This is the real deal. You got your Adamses and your Hamiltons and the rest of the boys in wigs (including a general who took his country's IOUs) but the fact is that somebody like us had to pay the candle bills at Independence Hall. Pony up.

BTTT I don't want to ping you all too often, but here is a great post. It would be such a great gift to keeping FRee Republic alive if every Washington FReeper would contribute JUST $5 Dollars! Not 5 a month, just FIVE $! Tonight. Now. You know you love it! Can't live without it :) Let's be the first state with 100% participation! Believe me, every penny, every dollar is appreciated!

Yet Jim still keeps it alive because of his conviction, and he is absolutely NOT making a profit on it. You know, this is one of my pet peeves. Maybe JR isn't making any money from this, but what would be wrong about it if he did? He is working to produce this "product" (Free Republic) that "consumers" like to use. He is not forcing anybody to come here against their will, nor is he getting a government grant to do this. We live in a capitalist country where people have a right to be rewarded for their hard work that is successful,so I don't give a rat's ass if he is earning $1 million a year from it. The key word here is "earning".
JR and I have had our differences in the past, and no doubt we will have them in the future. Having said that,I'm awful damn tired of hearing all the whining about him making money from producing a product that people use. It's one of the keystones our country is based on,and there is not a damn thing wrong with it!

Great post.
Appreciate hearing some history.
I ponied up for the monthly, figured it was time to put my money where my mouth is. Besides, we all know the internet ain't no free ride.

If there had not been a Free Republic would there have been a Fox News? I sometimes wonder.
I know alot of Freeper's here have given them some of their best lines.

An idea I picked up from someone else (wish I remembered who) ...... I have a link to the secure server displayed prominently on my profile page. I'll never know if it's done any good but I do know that it hasn't hurt anything being there.
Many people click on profile pages to check "born on" dates, to find out where a poster lives, or just out of curiosity. Others may want to consider putting the link on their page also.
