Gas-guzzlers ticketed for fuelling war

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sport utility vehicles across the United States will be ticketed by a group of peace protesters alleging that gas-guzzling cars fuel war and other deadly conflicts.

Tens of thousands of mock parking tickets have been printed for distribution in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, according to the Berkeley-based nonprofit group Project Underground.

"Gas-guzzling fuels terrorism and war," read the tickets, stamped "Violation" along one side.

"Drunk driving puts lives at risk -- and so does driving an SUV. Oil dependence drives conflicts that kill innocent people. Please take a moment to consider the true costs of driving an SUV," the tickets say.

Project Underground spokesman Gopal Dayaneni said the tickets were designed to help drivers see connections between gas-guzzling vehicles and a potential war in Iraq, which he said was motivated by American dependence on foreign oil.

"One of the huge pieces of this war (on Iraq) is about securing stable access to large amounts of crude oil," he said on Monday.

"Nothing typifies American over-consumption of petroleum more than gas-guzzling SUVs. We ask people who have SUVs to think deeply about the choices that they are making, and the consequences of those choices."

Gasoline mileage for sport utility vehicles differs widely but they consume far more fuel than smaller passenger cars.

The ticketing action on Tuesday is expected to coincide with a series of small demonstrations outside U.S. gasoline stations, where protesters plan to hand out leaflets arguing "access to oil is not worth war."

Organisers said they planned to continue to issue tickets to SUVs for several months.

Hope they have the name and address of the group on the tickets so they can get a real ticket for littering.

I never saw as many SUV's in one place as the hotel parking lot where Bubba was holding a fund raiser in Texarkana in 1999.

Oh, please bring your group and your tickets to Austin, TX.

I guess someone should point out to these enviro-dipsh**s that preventing domestic drilling for oil produces the same effect.

You are thinking in the same direction as me (be afraid....very afraid).

Thousands of tickets were printed.
Those printing presses (or copy machines) don't run on good vibrations, they use electricity produced in the most part by fossil fuels. The paper doesn't grow on trees, even though it comes from them. Chemicals and more electricity are used to process the paper, bleach to whiten it and heat to dry it (drive by a paper mill and smell the chemicals). The inks and dyes that are used in the printing or copying are usually obtained from oil products.

Surely these caring individuals can see the error in their ways.

a group of peace protesters

What's this, peace protesters are going to do something? Well, of the 4,500 press releases we received today announcing that this-or-that group is ticked off, this is obviously the one that deserves to run as a news story on the Reuters wire. Whatever peace protesters do is so important that everyone needs to hear about it. In fact we must run and tell the King.

Is there anyone left at Reuters who isn't a dyed-in-the-wool, anti-war Democrat? What in the world makes them think that this group deserves news coverage when 5,000 other outfits are screaming to get any attention at all? Why is every liberal activist group "big news" that "warrants coverage," while thousands of conservative activists can assemble in Washington for CPAC and Reuters wrote not one word about the event or about anything said there, even by Vice President Dick Cheney.

The "news" from Reuters is all liberals, all the time. And people wonder why they say there's media bias.

I'm guessing that most,if not all of these "Tickets"will be issued under the cover of darkness.

Or, they had better be in my neighborhood.
