Minister of Industry and Trade, Ehud Olmert says that Israel has enough food to supply public need in an emergency.
The ministrys director general, Amir Hiyak has told Olmert that in the last two months, the ministry has made all the necessary preparations to rapidly respond to any emergency occurrence. The director also reported that Israel maintains a sufficent supply of basic food stuffs to supply the needs of the population in the event of an emergency.
Mr Hiyak reported that the ministry has set up special teams in every region (Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv, etc) that would ensure a steady supply of necessities during an emergency, both to the pulic and to essential industries. Around 200 essential factories have been identified to serve general economic needs and another 200 factories that manufacture food items. Workers at these plants would be required to remain on the job in an emergency.
The ministry also keeps a close watch on essential goods whose prices have been limited by special order, such as mineral water, plastic and tape for sealing rooms, and batteries. According to the minsitry, businesses have gotten used to government supervision of these items and are not price gouging.
