A U.S. Marine writing from Vietnam, has hit the nail on the proverbial head as he relates the feelings felt towards the demonstrators protesting the war from the safe confines of the U.S. of A. Fits the peaceniks of 2003, perfectly.
Dear Santa,
I have decided to ask you for only one present this year. Since there is no snow here in Vietnam, you can't land your sleigh, so please just wrap up my present and I am sure the postal department will take care of your delivery. Santa, can you imagine the joy on my face when I open your gift and find the one thing that I want for Christmas--an anti-Vietnam demonstrator. At least I'd have someone, all mine, to share my excitement and experiences with, and Santa, I promise that I'll take special care of him.
First thing, I'll give him a haircut, if I have to do it with a bayonet, but I can't promise to keep him clean, the way I'd like to be, because baths are pretty scarce over here !
I'll share my food with him, and even give him my miserable bunk ! I'll share the impossible steaming heat with him. I'll share my heartbreak of seeing my buddies fall beside me.
I'll share the misery of trying to identify the bodies that the cong have left behind. I'll share my hours with him sitting beside me, waist deep in mud and water-filled fox hole.
But, Santa, I'll be warm with the joy of giving a deserving welcome to this Christmas present, you were thoughful enough to send me. I will be so careful of him, and watch out for the things he deserves. The next time one of our patrols are attacked by the cong, I will be the first one to let him run to the front to tell them that he loves them and wants to give them a flower. Santa, I don't want to ask for a Christmas present just for me, so do you think that perhaps you could send all my buddies a demonstrator for their very own ? A Marine
