Lindbergh Lives: Whispers blaming the war on a Jewish cabal have got a little louder
The Economist ^ | March 13, 2003 | Unattributed

Richmond, Virginia and Washington, DC – Jim Moran, a Democratic congressman from Virginia, has a reputation for leading with his mouth. His latest bon mot, however, could cost him his seat. On March 3rd, the pugilistic Irish Catholic suggested that the looming war with Iraq was the handiwork of the American Jews. “If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq,” he argued, “we would not be doing this.”

It has taken time for Mr Moran's comments to work their way into mainstream Washington politics, and he has already issued several apologies. But he is now drawing fierce criticism from both Republicans and Democrats of all religions. The reaction, which already includes calls by local rabbis for his resignation, rebukes by the White House and lectures from the congressional leadership, recalls the Trent Lott affair three months ago, when the Mississippi senator was forced to quit as Republican majority leader after indirectly praising segregation.

Mr Moran says that he has no intention of resigning. But his position is weakened by his somewhat spotty record. In 2001 he was rude about Ariel Sharon to the American Muslim Council. Mr Moran has also been criticised for taking political contributions—later returned—from Muslim organisations that federal authorities at one time suspected of having ties to terrorist groups.

Whatever his faults, Mr Moran is not alone in raising suspicions about the fact that so many hawks in the Bush administration, including the deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz and the head of the Pentagon's defence-policy board, Richard Perle, happen to be Jewish. Gradually people from the left and right are beginning to allege in public what some moderates whisper privately: that war against Iraq has been promoted by a cabal of Jewish hardliners who are more concerned with protecting Israel than they are with advancing America's national interest.

Shirley Williams, a left-of-centre British politician who is married to one of America's most prominent intellectuals, Richard Neustadt, and is currently a visiting professor at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, told the House of Lords that the Bush administration's policy is “propelled to some extent by what I can only describe as a fundamentalist Christian and fundamentalist Jewish drive that is almost as powerful as fundamentalist Islam itself”. Michael Lerner, a rabbi and editor of the leftist Jewish magazine Tikkun, was blackballed from speaking at an anti-war rally in San Francisco because some of the sponsors apparently refused to have a “pro-Israel” speaker.

The Plot Thickens

Yesterday we noted that Pat Buchanan and Edward Said, along with others such as Rep. Jim Moran and David Duke, have been peddling the idea that the impending liberation of Iraq is the result of a conspiracy by a Zionist "cabal," as Buchanan calls it, that is "colluding with Israel" to "ensnare our country in a series of wars that are not in America's interests." The Economist notes that such paranoid bigotry in the service of "peace" is nothing new: "In the 1930s, when anti-Semitism was both pervasive and respectable in America, Charles Lindbergh and his America-Firsters blamed Jewish interests for trying to drag America into a pointless war with Germany."

We were puzzled, though, by a seeming contradiction in the Buchanan/Said/Moran/Duke theory, which holds that (a) war in Iraq will harm America's interests by inflaming the Arab and Muslim worlds and spurring more terrorism, and (b) the cabal is pursuing such a war because it is in Israel's interests. How, we asked, would such a conflagration be good for Israel, which would be right in the thick of it? Well, a helpful reader answered our question:

What is obvious is that they [the Israelis] will use the resulting chaos as a pretext to get rid of the Palestinians, driving them out of the country into Jordan or Egypt. Who will say or do anything to stop them when the region is totally destabilized and a mess?

It's obvious! And our reader isn't the only one who's figured it out; the Tulane Hullabaloo quotes "adjunct Tulane professor and LaRouche Democrat Marty Rowland" as saying much the same thing. For those of you whose sense of the obvious is not as keenly developed as that of our interlocutor, however, let us spell out the assumptions underlying this theory:

• That the disastrous outcome of war in Iraq — "chaos," with the region "totally destabilized and a mess" — is foreordained.

• That Israel and its co-conspirators, some of whom hold subcabinet-level positions in the Bush administration, know this, but the rest of the administration and the majority of Congress have no clue and thus have been duped by the Zionist plotters into thinking the war has a significant chance of success.

• That although the whole region will be engulfed in "chaos," "totally destabilized and a mess," Israel will have no problem managing the forcible relocation of more than three million people, many of them heavily armed with guns and explosives, all the while defending its borders against the hostile states and terrorist groups that surround it.

Now, we know what you're thinking. (Of course we know; our Zionist masters told us.) How is it that the cabal members have managed to fool virtually the entire political leadership of the United States, while guys like Pat Buchanan, David Duke, Ed Said and the LaRouchies can see right through their little scheme? Well, think about it. If a discredited figure like Buchanan or Duke blows the whistle on the plot, no one is going to believe what he's saying. Obviously these guys are Zionist agents themselves, covering up the conspiracy by putting it out in plain sight in a way that no one will believe it!

There's one other man who is crucial to the success of the Zionist cabal's efforts: Saddam Hussein. He has spent 12 years defying U.N. resolutions and building weapons of mass destruction, creating the rationale for invasion, and who benefits? Israel! Obviously he too is a tool of the Zionists.

You really have to think this through to understand what a devilishly clever plot the Zionists have hatched. They have managed to turn their own worst enemies — in Europe, in the Muslim world, in American universities — into defenders of Saddam Hussein, who is actually a Zionist agent! Sound unlikely? No more so than killing a suicide bomber.

Palestinian Supporters Meet Gissin With Protest

Political protesters gathered Wednesday evening under a blanket of humidity and rain to support the plight of Palestinian citizens currently suffering in their war-torn native land. Protesters assembled to extend a disdainful welcome to Dr. Ra'anan Gissin, senior advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who spoke at the University Center that evening.

The protest drew students, citizens and community members alike. Representatives from several local organizations including C-3, a local anti-war organization, the LaRouche Democrats and the New Orleans chapter of the New Black Panther Party were all in attendance.

C-3: standing for Concern, Compassion, Community; "supports the right of Palestinians to self determination," explained member Mike Howells.

"We call on Israel to withdraw from the West Bank and the Gaza strip. We believe the Sharon government is violating international law through its occupation of those areas, and the repression of the people that live in those areas," Howells said.

"[Israel] is pushing for this war in Iraq because the plan is to push all of the Palestinians off the West Bank and Gaza and push them into Jordan so Israel can take over the rest of the occupied territory. That's against the United Nations' rules," adjunct Tulane professor and LaRouche Democrat Marty Rowland said.

Rowland, who is also a C-3 member, said, "Ariel Sharon is within a tradition of Fascist, Jewish people ' The report on how the Nazi's cleared the Jews out of the ghetto is now being used by the Israeli Defense Forces to clear the Palestinians out of Jenin and other cities."

Rowland addressed the Sept. 11 bombing, saying, "There's a lot of interesting leads that need to be followed up. For example, the man that owns the company that was in charge of security at Logan airport was a convicted criminal, and was Likud party-linked." He also questioned "why there were Israeli Intelligence officers on a rooftop in New Jersey video-taping the planes crashing into the World Trade Center," adding, "I'm not saying there's a conspiracy, but it sure smells like one to me."

C-3 is supported by several local organizations, including the New Orleans chapter of the New Black Panthers.

"We have been working with C-3 on a coalition basis," said Nnamdi Okeke, Chairman of the New Orleans chapter of the New Black Panther Party. "We participated in this rally of protest for what we in New Orleans chapter of the New Black Panther Party feel is an oppressive government of Israel that oppresses the Palestinians and denies the Palestinians their just rights to self-determination."

And the America First people said that those agitating to go to war against Hitler were mostly Jews also.

Some things just never change.

What an unholy alliance of scoundrels are opposed to our action in Iraq! Black Muslim militants, the Marxist and socialist Left, the liberal wing of the Catholic Church, the mainline Protestant churches, the white supremacist and Holocaust denier crowd, the paleo-conservatives of the Pat Buchanan stripe, the libertarians of the Mises Institute and Antiwar.com, Lyndon LaRouche and his cohorts, a major portion of the Democratic Party, and Arab-American pressure groups.

Let's hope this widely disparate crew, who are united only in their war opposition, starts to feud among themselves and break up.

The Buchananites on this board have been silent this week.

It appears it has become obvious, even to the sycophants, that Pat Buchanan is blatantly anti-semitic, and always has been.

I have always liked him, but if he really is anti-semitic I change my mind real quick. A few years ago a strong Buchanan supporter worked with me on a congresswomans campaign. He said some very anti-jew stuff, I told on him, and he was soon outa there.
