Sometimes people grow up long after they have grown-up. We all tend to idolize the people we would like to be, at least until we find out who we are, and what they are. Sometimes it takes a long time, sometimes it takes a war.
Take the Hollywood crowd. For years and years, waiting to find out who would be nominated for an Academy Award was almost as exciting as watching the Academy Awards on TV. Have you ever wondered why any of that mattered, even a little?
If you are a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild) it might matter, a smidge. Otherwise, who the hell cares? The fact is, watching a bunch of utterly narcissistic and arrogant dilettantes tell each other how marvelous the other is, is a bit nauseating.
Honestly, if you step back and ponder the totality of the event, it is nothing more than one group of pampered individuals, pampering other individuals who can return the favor next year. The folks watching, the little people like me, get to see winners thank people none of us know or will ever meet, for all the greatness, importance and perfection the winner has and is, as an artiste. How exciting.
On the other hand, we do get to hear and see clips of movies that we saw in a commercial for the same damn movie they are trying to promote by giving it an award because someone thinks its a great idea that qualifies as art because it is politically correct for the movie or person to get the award this year.
Of course for music lovers there is the singing of the various songs that were written specifically for a movie that was nominated for the academy award. Lets see what is nominated this year; there are the songs from The Wild Thornberrys, Gangs of New York, Frida and a couple of others. Needless to say, they are not songs very many people hum on the way to work, or anywhere else for that matter.
Still, there is the idea, the glamour, the fashion of the academy awards that attract a great many viewers and fans. Maybe people just like to watch other people parade around in $5,000 shoes or wear belts that cost as much as the down payment on a condo. Its not that it is a bad thing; it just makes you wonder what makes the clothes or accessories worth that much besides the fact that the bastards wearing them couldnt care less how much they cost, but in fact compete to pay more, just because they can.
If that is not enough, there is this war thing. Many in Hollywood have decided to open their mouths using their own brains to form the words and ideas that come out. Sadly, and almost routinely, all we hear is basically the same. America is a terrorist nation. We kill for oil and our warriors are nothing more than baby murderers.
We are told that Hollywood is a bastion of Liberal and Leftist thought. They are the progressive, thinkers and we need to take a listen to what they have to say.
It is time for them to hear what we have to say instead.
Basically, it should be the same from all of us. All of us who dont get to ride in private jets and limousines while we tell everyone else they are helping terrorists when they pick up their kids from school in an SUV. We need to call them what they are: hypocrites.
Up until a couple of days ago it wasnt that bad. Sure, there was Danny Glover talking about the evils America was and still is. There was George Clooney and Martin Sheen explaining how President Bush needed to listen to them rather than the CIA, State Department and DOD. Even Barbra Streisand was little more than irritating in her role as queen ditz. Then the bottom fell out. The Dixie Chicks turned on America.
Yup, that did it. While they were not exactly the definition of Country-Western, they were close enough. Their bashing of our President while in a foreign land was over the top, "we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." And then they made matters worse, they explained themselves, "The anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."
Adding, "I feel the President is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."
For the Dixie Chicks, Americans being slaughtered by terrorists supplied with chemical, biological and nuclear weapons is not as frightening as America trying to stop that from occurring. Its a good bet they dont even have the sense to fathom the notion. Being celebrities, they apparently dont have to.
It has to stop.
These people are at the very least not worthy of our attention, let alone our money.
We all need to send a message. We can stop buying their CDs or going to their movies, but we need to do more. They need to be shunned as a whole and only let back in to our good graces one at a time, based on their good deeds and repentance.
While you may think that is unfair, after all, not all in Hollywood are anti-American. Thats too bad. We need a UN resolution 1441 of our own, let the artistes who are not ashamed of America, prove it. The rest of us have nothing to prove.
