Anti-Oscar Movement, No Tribute for Bigmouths
accuracy in media ^ | 3/14/03 | Paul Walfield

Sometimes people grow up long after they have grown-up. We all tend to idolize the people we would like to be, at least until we find out who we are, and what they are. Sometimes it takes a long time, sometimes it takes a war.

Take the Hollywood crowd. For years and years, waiting to find out who would be nominated for an Academy Award was almost as exciting as watching the Academy Awards on TV. Have you ever wondered why any of that mattered, even a little?

If you are a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild) it might matter, a smidge. Otherwise, who the hell cares? The fact is, watching a bunch of utterly narcissistic and arrogant dilettantes tell each other how marvelous the other is, is a bit nauseating.

Honestly, if you step back and ponder the totality of the event, it is nothing more than one group of pampered individuals, pampering other individuals who can return the favor next year. The folks watching, the little people like me, get to see winners thank people none of us know or will ever meet, for all the greatness, importance and perfection the winner has and is, as an artiste. How exciting.

On the other hand, we do get to hear and see clips of movies that we saw in a commercial for the same damn movie they are trying to promote by giving it an award because someone thinks it’s a great idea that qualifies as art because it is politically correct for the movie or person to get the award this year.

Of course for music lovers there is the singing of the various songs that were written specifically for a movie that was nominated for the academy award. Let’s see what is nominated this year; there are the songs from The Wild Thornberrys, Gangs of New York, Frida and a couple of others. Needless to say, they are not songs very many people hum on the way to work, or anywhere else for that matter.

Still, there is the idea, the glamour, the fashion of the academy awards that attract a great many viewers and fans. Maybe people just like to watch other people parade around in $5,000 shoes or wear belts that cost as much as the down payment on a condo. It’s not that it is a bad thing; it just makes you wonder what makes the clothes or accessories worth that much besides the fact that the bastards wearing them couldn’t care less how much they cost, but in fact compete to pay more, just because they can.

If that is not enough, there is this war thing. Many in Hollywood have decided to open their mouths using their own brains to form the words and ideas that come out. Sadly, and almost routinely, all we hear is basically the same. America is a terrorist nation. We kill for oil and our warriors are nothing more than baby murderers.

We are told that Hollywood is a bastion of Liberal and Leftist thought. They are the “progressive,” thinkers and we need to take a listen to what they have to say.

It is time for them to hear what we have to say instead.

Basically, it should be the same from all of us. All of us who don’t get to ride in private jets and limousines while we tell everyone else they are helping terrorists when they pick up their kids from school in an SUV. We need to call them what they are: hypocrites.

Up until a couple of days ago it wasn’t that bad. Sure, there was Danny Glover talking about the evils America was and still is. There was George Clooney and Martin Sheen explaining how President Bush needed to listen to them rather than the CIA, State Department and DOD. Even Barbra Streisand was little more than irritating in her role as queen ditz. Then the bottom fell out. The Dixie Chicks turned on America.

Yup, that did it. While they were not exactly the definition of Country-Western, they were close enough. Their bashing of our President while in a foreign land was over the top, "we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." And then they made matters worse, they explained themselves, "The anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

Adding, "I feel the President is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

For the Dixie Chicks, Americans being slaughtered by terrorists supplied with chemical, biological and nuclear weapons is not as frightening as America trying to stop that from occurring. It’s a good bet they don’t even have the sense to fathom the notion. Being celebrities, they apparently don’t have to.

It has to stop.

These people are at the very least not worthy of our attention, let alone our money.

We all need to send a message. We can stop buying their CD’s or going to their movies, but we need to do more. They need to be shunned as a whole and only let back in to our good graces one at a time, based on their good deeds and repentance.

While you may think that is unfair, after all, not all in Hollywood are anti-American. That’s too bad. We need a UN resolution 1441 of our own, let the “artistes” who are not ashamed of America, prove it. The rest of us have nothing to prove.

my brother said that sunday night when the oscars come on he will immediatly switch over to fox news channel. Then switch back to abc the minute he hears the oscars are over. I think that is a pretty good way to send them all a message especially if there are any neilson familys doing it and marking it down in thier books.

It's Oscar time again? There are so many of these award shows who can keep up? Must be a rule that everyone has to win something no matter for what so they all feel good.

Well goody for them.

Oscars = Self-indulgent, self-important airheads recognizing other self-indulgent, self-important airheads on national TV.

Hmmm.

Saddam's 48 hours are up just before this week's episode of West Wing.

Hmmm.

Not to mention, the oscar's only promote trash, anti-Americanism, and will never give films that are decent an honorable mention... Time to lose them. Tune into Fox, brilliant choice of dates by our President... Take that, Hollyweird....;)

Don't know about your local TV schedules, but ours in AZ have pulled West Wing (albeit re-runs) in favor of two Law & Orders back-to-back for two weeks now :)

Maybe Sheen and Saddam can go out together?

Wouldn't it be "special" if The War began two or three hours before the LaughingAcademy Awards?

Can you say "preemption," boys and girls? I knew you could......

Well, we could have our Free Republic Oscars. The only things eligible for the award would be movies that present a conservative view of the world.

Of course, we couldn't call them the Oscars. We'd have to name them after some prominent actor or actress who also did a lot of work to advance conservative causes.

You guessed it: "The Ronnies."

And the nominees for the coveted "Ronnie" for Best Picture of the year for 2002 are:

--A Walk to Remember (A Christian teenager is the hero--and she keeps her faith. A tearjerker.)

--Barbershop (So conservative it would have had major protests if it had been made by white people. It got protested anyway.)

--Drumline (Didn't see this one, but I hear it emphasized hard work as the key to success.)

--Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (The following dialogue is one example of why this movie is conservative:

Théoden: I will not risk open war!
Aragorn: Open war is upon you whether you risk it or not. )

--Signs (A movie about how God can help in ways we may not first appreciate.)

And the winner of the 2002 "Ronnie" (in this poster's opinion)

"Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers."

Other votes welcomed.

I agree that both are good.

Think the "Ronnies" might be a possible vanity thread for Oscar night, so we can get a vote from the rest of Freepers? Or do we have too many vanities as it is?

I have told my husband and all friends. Boycott the Oscars! Don't watch. No viewers, the networks lose, and the advertisers are not happy. I call that a win/win situation. Let the hollywierd leftists elites know what we really think of them. That evening instead, read a book, listen to some classical music, chat with your spouse and/or kids, log on to Freerepublic..the possiblities are endless.

Ohhhh I do like your idea. The 'Ronnies'. Yep...I think this should be a vanity for Sunday evening. Might I suggest a category of greatest lines from conservative movies of the past?

tonight on American Idol (yes, i watch it) Simon (the English judge) told one of the singers that she has a country sound, and maybe she could take the place of "that girl from the Dixie Chicks!" hahaha!
