In WWII people hung small banners with blue star on them for each family member in the military. They hung banners with gold stars for a killed family member. Gold Star Mothers were neighborhood projects even after the war when I was a kid.

Kids ran erands for Gold Star Mothers. The men painted and such for them etc. As neighborhoods broke up and the war became less a dominate fact of life this changed.

I thought of the blue star because a thread said blue stars were coming back.
