Lyrics
Garry Owen was the unofficial marching song of the Seventh Cavalry. Gen. Custer reportedly heard the song among his Irish troop and liked it. The tune was then played so often the 7th became tied to it.

The tune is first documented as Auld Bessy in 1788. It was later (1800) in the opera Harlequin Amulet (the Majic of Mona). About that time it was attributed to "Jackson of Cork" by a book of Country Dances by William Campbell. It also appeared in part two (1802) of Nathaniel Gow's four volume Complete Repository of the Original Scotch Slow Tunes.

Thomas Moore also wrote a set of lyrics to the tune The Daughters of Erin.

Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed
But join with me, each jovial blade
Come, drink and sing and lend your aid
To help me with the chorus:

Chorus
Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.

We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun,
We'll make the mayor and sheriffs run
We are the boys no man dares dun
If he regards a whole skin.

Chorus

Our hearts so stout have got no fame
For soon 'tis known from whence we came
Where'er we go they fear the name
Of Garryowen in glory.
Chorus

With the 7th Cavalry heading for Baghdad, live on TV, here's the tune, lyrics, and a few more links to the history of "Garryowen" the 7th Cavalry's song.

BTW, any protesters I see today, while heading into work, are going to be greeted with the cry of "Garryowen!" from my car. They probably won't get it, but I don't really care at this point.

about two or three summers ago I had the opportunity to be in Tennesee during a reunion of the 7th cav. I managed to weasel one of the crystal steins from one of their members (It was legit, I have been told) who called himself "Killer".

It is sometihng I have treasured since, not only for it's beauty but for what it represents.

This is one of my favorites, though the lyrics are a bit hard to remember.

The 3rd Brigade CO used to make the division band come out to our FSB to play Garry Owen when we'd return from an operation. This was at Mace which was NE of Saigon out by Xuan Loc. We'd be absolutely bushed, but when the band struck up Garry Owen I don't care how tired you were or how badly the op had gone, you just stood up a little straighter and somehow it wasn't as much an effort to take the next step.

Of course, the band members didn't look any too happy and seemed in a rush to get back on their transport for the trip back to Bien Hoa, but it sure helped our day.
