"This does not discriminate against smokers, they will be allowed to smoke, just not in their apartments." About damn time, who do these old farts think they are anyway? This is my Medicaid money they are pissing away on preventable lung disease caused by smoking. If they want to smoke let them live on the streets and forgo any money from Medicaid to boot! Friggin' freeloaders, and quit drinking too.

Haha! This is funny! If you think young people can get angry, JUST WAIT till you see a bunch of furious senior citizens! ;-D Well, Seniors were brought up in a smoking society. It was the thing to do, and Seniors that still smoke, enjoy it. I sure hope they put their foots down and really go after the idiots that is instigating this!
The way the anti-smokers are telling everyone that smoking and second hand smoke is a killer, it's funny we HAVE any Senior homes left. Know what I mean?!

I for one would not want to be in charge of enforcing this rule. Cops will tell you that old guys are more dangerous in a lot of ways than the young ones because they ain't got as much to lose.

""This does not discriminate against smokers, they will be allowed to smoke, just not in their apartments." says Councilwoman Claudia Bell-de la Pena."
Then effectively most of them won't be allowed to smoke. Elder apartment dwellers spend an awful lot of their time right in their apartments since many can't navigate outside as well as they used to be able to. Since by far the largest percentage of such apartment facilities are air conditioned, most windows stay shut all the time, so why should anyone's smoking in his/her apartment bother anyone else?

What are they afraid of?? That someone may die in a retirement home??

A Thousand Oaks Council member's proposal to prohibit smoking in a senior apartment complex sparked criticism from the director of the project."We don't support it," said Douglas Tapking, director of the Area Housing Authority, the agency behind the 57-unit Oak Creek Senior Villas. "To tell someone they cannot smoke in the privacy of their own home seems somehow basically wrong."
and finally, Earlier this month, representatives from an anti-smoking group, Smokefree Air For Everyone, asked the council to prohibit smoking at Oak Creek.
You do realize that the director of the Area Housing Authority is not in favor of this and the city council is trying to ram it down their throats anyway.
Plus, there would never have been a word said about this if SmokeNOfree Air For Everyone would have kept their noses out of it.
Just another anti-smoking organization trying to control everyone's life.

"This does not discriminate against smokers, they will be allowed to smoke, just not in their apartments." Let's change that around a bit and see how it looks.
"This does not discriminate against blacks; they will be allowed to ride the bus, just not up front."
Sounds like bigotry?
I though so.

Ok, let's now hear from intolerant (and seemingly terminally ignorant) anti-smokers.
Where does the path of "being against unhealthy behavior" end? I'm serious! Think about it - if you can. IF you can't think about it and wish to flame me anyway - have at it! I'm easily amused.

Unless they are installing sprinklers, smoking is a huge fire hazard especially for unsupervised elderly and especially for those folks on oxygen.

Sprinklers are required by code in these new buildings, especially if Federal funding is involved (and I imagine, Californicate being one of the more regulated places, it is required by the state).
I have no problem with the common areas and apartments where oxygen is required being smoke free.
I do have a problem with one and two bedroom apartments (I assume on slabs, being Cali) being brought in for an average cost of over $200,000.
I just brought in a 2200 sq.foot three bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, 2 car garage high end house for that kind of money, including the riverview lot and demolishing and removing the old farmhouse on the property.
Nice work if you can get it, eh?
There must be a freakin hospital built in or something.

I suppose they can hobble outside into the snow with their walkers and oxygen carts.
All good leftist absolutists will applaud the punishment they've earned with their addiction.
These people are humorless and relentlesss.
