Atheist to deliver council invocation Associated Press
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston City Council will open its meeting next week with an invocation by an atheist.
Herb Silverman, president of the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry, asked Councilman Kwadjo Campbell for the opportunity to give the invocation so he could introduce diversity to council meetings. He will give the invocation Tuesday.
"The definition of an invocation is 'to call for with fervent desire,' " he said. "What I expect to happen is giving advice to other human beings."
Silverman, a mathematics instructor at the College of Charleston, identifies himself as an atheist.
He provided an advance copy of his planned invocation to The (Charleston) Post and Courier.
"What divides us is not so much our religious differences in this diverse country but the degree of commitment we have to equal freedom of conscience for all people," the invocation reads. "We are gathered today, both religious and secular members of our community, with the shared belief that we must treat our fellow human beings with respect and dignity."
Campbell said it is appropriate to represent all faiths - even a lack of faith.
"We're a society of different ideas, and no idea should be suppressed," said Campbell, a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. "Every idea should have equal opportunity, and I would give any group an opportunity."

Okay, I'll buy that. But the other end of the bat phone is unplugged...
This one ought to be a gem.
"Dear members of the Charleston City Council, members of the public, etc.:"

. . . (pause) . . .
. . . (pause) . . .
. . . (pause) . . .
" . . . Amen."
Actually, I'm kidding. I have no idea what the invocation will be. But I do think this is a reasonable candidate for an atheist's invocation:

That's about the most an athiest can "invoke".
Good 'un!
What does an dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac do?
Lies awake all night wondering if there really is a dog.
Ahh. The ultimate goal of any meeting, in my opinion.
You win. That's the funniest thing I've read all week!
I remember that, now. You're right, his negative press has dropped off. Amazing, isnt it?
That's what praying is called, whether you believe in a God, or not.
Diversity has become an excuse for all kinds of stupidity.
