US soldiers 'are using Jordan to enter Iraq'

By Justin Huggler in Maan, Jordan
28 March 2003

This dusty, impoverished corner of Jordan is making the country's authorities nervous. For one thing, there is the protest against the war in Iraq that the people of Maan plan to hold today – a protest they call the "march of the coffins".

Then there is the military base at Jafr, 50 miles away in the desert, where locals say they have seen hundreds of US soldiers arrive in the last few months, plus trucks carrying tanks and armoured vehicles.

It encapsulates Jordan's dilemma – how to juggle the pressure from its ally, the United States, to help with the war in Iraq, with the fury of a population that is opposed to it.

Salfa abu Tayi – the grand-daughter of Auda abu Tayi, the Bedouin fighter of Lawrence of Arabia fame – says she has seen US soldiers at the base, and tanks covered with canvas. It is an open secret that small teams of US, and possibly British, special forces are operating in western Iraq out of Jordan.

Out at the Jafr military base, Blackhawk helicopters could be seen flying in – confirming one part of her story. It was not possible to confirm any more before Jordanian security arrived to say the road was closed.

The Jordanian government has admitted there are 6,000 US troops here, but says they are only here to protect Jordan from Iraqi missile attack and train Jordanian troops.

But reporters have seen US army Jeeps speeding towards the Iraqi border. If Ms abu Tayi's claim about the tanks is true, it would raise new questions about how heavily involved this front is likely to get.

The possibility that American soldiers are in the base at Jafr is certainly infuriating the people of Maan, which is a problem for the Jordanian authorities. While the Jordanian capital, Amman, is a sleepy, peaceful place, Maan has been the most restive city in the country for decades. In 1984 the late King Hussein had to come here personally to calm protests. Last week, when protests against the war broke out all over Jordan, Maan's were by far the most violent.

Sheikh Adi Mohamid, one of the Bedouin tribal chiefs who control Maan society, says the police arrested him, but let him go after his supporters demanded his release.

Sheikh Mohamid is the head of a committee formed several years ago because of perceived government injustices towards Maan. He says: "The government of Jordan made a shameful decision to participate in this war by allowing these troops to go to Iraq."

He also claims he saw tanks being driven to Jafr on trucks. And he names Jordanian companies contracted to provide facilities for US soldiers at the base. The protest is called "the march of the coffins", he says, because "this is a message that we are ready to die, to condemn the government".

If Jordan was smart they would join the war even through the protest like the British and get some technology out of it like Britian did in the first Gulf War.

Ok, well, it's out there now. When I saw that reference YESTERDAY to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, and then I remembered that VERY early on there were a lot of Army guys doing the old "football shift" to the west through Saudi Arabia---and that the Saudis did NOT allow reporters with them---well, you have to put two and two together.

Saddam has not yet seen the real "shock and awe," that's all I'm saying.

I love the way the European press is trying to inflame the Arab world against us.

Realising that America will succeed soon they want to turn every Arab nation against us.

But reporters have seen US army Jeeps speeding towards the Iraqi border.

How long has it been since the U.S. Army stopped using Jeeps?

I believe I saw a map the other day right here on FR where it showed a military force out of Jordan.

I don't know which Thread it was on and I ignored the implications.

If anyone else remembers it, I would like to see it again.

Salfa abu Tayi says she has seen US soldiers at the base, and tanks covered with canvas...sounds like some militia types who see un vehicles in the desert or national parks of this country.

I'd keep an open mind.

It ain't two-lane blacktop from the border to Baghdad, it is a four-lane divided highway, complete with medians. Also has the added advantages of having no creeps-in-jeeps like the Basra route or the Nasirayah turkey shoot.

Americans love to give surprises. It is one of those things that make us so special.

lavrenti suggests:   "I'd keep an open mind."

Thanks, but as far as the details of this story are concerned, I'll take a pass...

Just look at any Middle East map. If the story had claimed the U.S. forces were in eastern Jordon, you might have a reason to keep an eye on the situation. But the towns of Ma'an and Jafr, that are cited in the story, are in the far southwestern corner of Jordon and the U.S.forces would have to transverse the entire length of (70% Palestinian) Jordon, through its most populated areas, in order to get to Iraq. And that would mean the end of the "Hashemite" Kingdom.

This story is crap and just an attempt by a leftist, anti-American, British newspaper to sow more discord. Give it any credit whatsoever, and you play into the hands of those that want to see us lose our battle in Iraq.

Not so fast.

I spent a lot of time in Jordan in the 80's. I have always been a adherent of the idea of coalition forces going in from the West. I still have business contacts there who, from the tone of their voices, tell me that something is afoot. Also, last fall the Jordanian police called in the Army and they hit Ma'an (which lays just to the west of the major north/south highway out of Aqaba up to Amman, hard with a quite a few casualties on both sides.

Something is going on there, historically large parts of Iraq were originally part of the Hashemite Kingdom (current rulers of Jordan), and in 1969 the Jordanians dealt with the Palestinians rather brutally and would do so again.
