British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw's comments equating United Nations resolutions on Iraq with those concerning Israel ("Straw's remarks spur protest in Jerusalem," World, Friday) demonstrate either a total lack of appreciation of the differences between the two situations or an underhanded attempt to sell out Israel to appease Arab public opinion.

In 1976, for instance, eight nations on the Security Council supported a resolution condemning Israel for its miraculous rescue of 103 hostages captured by Palestinian terrorists and held with Idi Amin's complicity in Entebbe, Uganda. The resolution was withdrawn in the face of promised United States and British vetoes. A U.S.-British-backed resolution condemning the terrorists for taking hostages in the first place, by contrast, could muster the support of only six Security Council members.
That pretty much shows how helpful the UN is when it comes to World Peace.
